Changing rifles

Hi all looking for some info ? Onlyever had one rifle on my ticket and am possibly looking to trade it in against a new one .Can you trade in your old one and come away with said new one on the same day as long as it's the same calibre or would you need to apply for variation I know you can with a shotgun but is it the same with a firearm ??
