What ought I to do?

Hi all,

This morning I went to the local car boot sale with a mate of mine as we usually do on a Sunday morning.
At one of the stalls there were two air rifles on a sheet on the floor.
One of them was a B.S.A. in which I was not interested.
The other one however, had Daystate written on it.
I have been lusting after one of these for quite a long time.

I picked it up and had a quick look at it and thought that it was fairly old and had had a bit of a rough life.
Nothing serious that I could see but well worth refurbishment.

The stallholder came across and said 'That's a good one, they start at about £700 and go to £1400 when new.'
'How much?' asked I.
£280 said the man.
'How old?' I asked.
About 6 or 8 years old he said, I know about air rifles, I have seventeen of them.

When I got home I went to the Daystate owner's club site and looked up the serial number of the rifle.
Turns out that it was made in 1994!

Now for the problem.
The site also said that this rifle was made as a 28lbs,+ rifle.

I thought that 'Once an FAC always an FAC.'
Assuming that this is the case then this guy is trying to sell a unlicensed firearm at a car boot sale.

My concern is that anyone could buy it and someone could get seriously hurt.
Or someone could get five years in de pokey.

I realise that this is not my problem and that I could just do nothing ...... But it bothers me.

What are your thoughts please?

Morals say you should report it, common sense says stay out of it. Best of luck with your decision.

Maybe have quiet word with the fella....have you got a chrono? Maybe take it with you and offer to check the rifle
if it is over the limit then its quite likely an honest mistake on his part. I'd be inclined to give the fella a chance before reporting to the old bill

Some force areas USED to be more tolerant than others and allowed owners to put them on or take them off apparently

I think that what I shall do is to speak to the stallholder next week
and see what he has to say .

If, as he claims,
he 'knows about air guns' then surely he would withdraw it from sale.

I have a printout from the Daystate site and I shall take it to show him.

We shall see...........
