Electric fence voltage dropper?

Post by THE GRIFF » 11 Feb 2015, 19:09

I have just rigged up the eectric fence below off eBay
http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.vi ... 1588972467

I have put it around my garden to keep my dogs off my veggie patch and flower beds. It says on the listing, the box and instructions it is suitable for large and small dogs(many kits aren't). After setting it up both the staffie and and my lab really yelped and sulked after touching it and the wife has gone mad, I have explained it won't harm them and once they have done it a couple of times they won't go near it but now she is sulking.
Is there a way to reduce the shock, it is a mains kit that I would think drops the 240 volts to 12v inside the energiser. If it was a battery powered one then I would think the first thing to try would be lowering the voltage going into it but that's not as straight forward with a mains powered one.
I was thinking maybe some sort of dropper on the fence wire after it comes out of the energiser.
Any ideas, links or drawings would be appreciated because I now have 3 sulking bitch's.

First off go to maplins and buy a project box. Then order a new toy of some sort online. When the new toy turns up glue the project box to the top of the fencer

You can then assure your mrs that the 'little black box' has dropped the voltage....by which time your dogs have learned not to touch the fence

two birds....one stone

I could order myself a new voltage dropper for my pigeon rotary, then stick a project box on the fence!!
Good thinking!!

Hello all
The humour is very good on this quiet Saturday night  , you could try a dummy mock-up with a 110 volt power tool transformer wrapped up in some see through plastic sheeting showing that you have gone to the extra effort to make it weather proof as well, a large yellow box sitting at the start of your electric fence line would be bound to earn you house marks it time for Valentine's Day. On the more serious matter about your electric fence issues I have dozens and dozens of bundles of electric fence stranded wire and tape if you need any, even have a P70 5 O'LITE FENCE TESTER gizmo that you hang off the stranded electric fence wire and earth ground lead and it will give you a voltage checker indicator from 625V, 950V, 2000V, 3300V up to 4650V. I will dig the checker indicator out if you want to have a loan etc. Thanks Phil

I have a couple of these to keep the missus's nags in the right field, they can sense when its on without touching it, not sure is dogs can though. The dogs won't go near it now that they know it hurts - neither will your missus. These units fire out a DC volt pulse, up to 6000V. The only way to drop the output is to earth the fence it out a little. Once weeds and grass grow into it this happens naturally and you can see the drop using a clip on tested (more better than touching it and getting a jolt up to your elbow). The earlier advice about sticking a false box onto it will work too.
Before my daughter was born, my mother-in-law asked me to put a fence up to make the small river at the bottom of the garden safe - I told her I was going o fit an electric fence - she went nuts - total sense of humour failure. Its great to wind them up!!!
