Hello and advice needed

Post by woody3883 » 18 Sep 2012, 20:25

Hi there

I'm currently looking at having a play with some night vision for when I'm airsofting at night. Not sure how well it's going to work, especially with having to wear eye protection at all time. As it's a bit of an experiment I'm trying to keep the cost down as much as possible and looking at 2nd hand kit on various sites.

So far I've narrowed it down to a Yukon NVMT 4x50 and a Pulsar Challenger 1x20, but not sure which is best or if there are any others worth considering. I'm looking to either mount it straight onto the weaver rail on my rifle or head mount it. I know you can get a head mount for both, although I'd probably have to get a 1x mag lens for the Yukon if I go down this route. I've also seen a rifle mount kit for the Yukon but not one for the Pulsar (not sure whether the mount kit would work with the Pulsar).

Think I've ruled out going down the DSA route as it looks a bit too cumbersome and delicate to be running around at night and scrambling up and down banks and through bushes.

So if anybody can offer any advice it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

No you haven't scared me off

I've had a look at your Challenger in the for sale section Sunndog. Lets just say I'm looking for a 2nd hand one a bit more used than yours to keep the price down. What's your thoughts on the Challenger Sunndog, is it any good bearing in mind most airsoft guns only have a maximum effective range of 70 metres at a push.

Has anybody got any experience with the Yukon NVMT range?

well i'm open to offers mate

as for the two units there about the same performance wise. exept the yukon 1x lens is actually more like 1.7x so not so good headmounted
the pulsar is probably a bit better built and slightly more compact

Hello and welcome woddy3883

I am an Airsofter and have played quite a few night games.
The difficulty people find is as you said, seeing through the goggles/shooting glasses into the NV kit and beyond due to the goggles getting fogged up etc. Not so much of an issue if your laid up in a sniping position but if you have been running about..!

Also we employed a tactic of using a night vision monocular with the IR illuminator turned off so that we could spot the IR beam from anyone else using an IR sighting system, so beware if you use one, people have countermeasures! ;)

Another problem we found with using IR NV sights in Airsoft is identifying teams, you cant make out the colour of a players tags so blue fire is always an issue.
Also you will be mounting an expensive bit of kit on your rifle/head which could easily be wrecked if hit in the right place by BB's, as you know in night games people tend to hose an area where they think an enemy player is hiding, that could prove expensive for you if your sight gets hit and smashed!
(ask my mate how he felt when his brand new genuine Trijicon Acog had its objective lens smashed by BB's when a Noob hosed him and his scope at close range.. bye bye £1100!)

Thanks for the info Al.

Hmmmm food for thought. I definitely like the idea of night vision for airsoft but maybe the practicalities and cost aren't worth the hassle. Before I take this any further, I think I'll pop down to the local air gun shop and see if they've got any to try with my eye pro I wear. I use Heroshark stamped steel mesh goggles due to me fogging anything up with a lens in it, which might make it awkward.

I'd definitely buy/fabricate some sort of lens protector for it if I do get one. Wouldn't want it getting shot out.

DBD81 if you get a chance to try it you should definitely give it a go. It's only painful if you get caught close range and even then your adrenalin is pumping so it only stings a bit.
