Just wondering, did you have the smell of bait on you hands before you put the camera out? This would explain the fox taking the strap if it was smelling and tasting good.

That's a good point, I had to think but I don't think I did. I'm sure I put the bait out earlier before I went back with the camera later. There could quite well have been some sort of smell on the strap though as I'd been handling feed with the camera in my pocket. You're right though, something smelt good.

Take a tip from the horse-riding fraternity; they all use some stuff called "Cribbox" to stop horses chewing stuff. It is a sort of smelly brown grease, which has the hot ingredient from chilli peppers in it, plus some bitter-tasting stuff and something to give it a bit of a pong. Trust me on this, you do NOT want to get the stuff onto a cut or abrasion on your hands, it stings like anything!

It also tastes truly appalling, as any horse who has had a taste of the stuff will attest. Mostly you don't need to use gobs of the stuff either; just a little bit to give them a smell is enough, once they've tasted it once they never go back. It also works on squirrels; we had some which were chewing lumps off a shed, possibly out of boredom or frustration. One good application of Cribbox all over and the little rascals don't go within yards of that shed now.

Rub a bit of that into the straps, and they'll not eat them again ever.
