Anyone know about lifted landrovers?
Anyone know about lifted landrovers?
I have a 300tdi disco that's been lifted about 4 inches. On my 3rd set of front prop uj's this year and they are going again.
I am wanting to get a different prop that is more capable of coping with the lift.
I could fit a double cardan prop off a td5 if I changed the flange on the transfer box, or would a heavier version of the single knuckle type that's on it be upto the job. Or should I spend £400 on a all singing all dancing heavy duty double cardan off road one, I know none of these props are designed for the angle of a 4 inch lift but don't want to spend a fortune on a expensive prop and still be changing uj's every 3 month.

Re: Anyone know about lifted landrovers?
I'd say either get the best double cardan you can or ideally take the lift out or half it.....a 4" lift is huge, unless you are doing a winch challenge it will be far more hassle than its worth IMO
i'v been off roading for years including running a winch challenge tomcat for a while.
the places a standard landrover will go are amazing...in reality most owners don't need to upgrade anything bar the tyres

Re: Anyone know about lifted landrovers?
As above, you don't need lift, or gigantic tyres. The 4" lift still leaves the diffs the same height, all you gain is a little more breakover.
I did modified trials for donkeys years, even been known to win the odd big inter club trial
. Go to a trial and see just how LITTLE lift they have.
falling over on side slopes is far more important (or not falling over)
Go to some trials and LOOK, then modify wisely

Re: Anyone know about lifted landrovers?
Thanks, it was already lifted when I bought it, it had a lot of money spent on it and I didn't really want to lower it. I do a lot of road miles in it so realise it's not ideal lifted that high but it's sort of grown on me and I like it the way it is.
Over the last year I have replaced quite a lot of parts and just wondered if buying a better prop would solve the problem of uj's wearing quickly or wether the same would happen with a more expensive prop.

Re: Anyone know about lifted landrovers?
I have noticed over the years that the likes of britpart don't last 5 minutes, I always use something like QH. Still think it's too high though, it's not an off road vehicle now, it's just a posing toy. And unfortunately, anyone who does take off roading seriously knows so.

Re: Anyone know about lifted landrovers?
Someone like QT services will do you prop that will last longer than a standard one. But that high a lift just stresses everything much more than needs be
including your own butt cheeks on side slopes or cornering on the road
I know we're being a bit negative on your landy here dude. its just that we have seen so many wallowing around on the road and belly up off it
They do look cool though, what tyres are you running?

Re: Anyone know about lifted landrovers?
I have took on board your comments regarding the lift and may look into lowering it a couple of inches next year, I have said its a 4 inch lift but will have to double check to make sure it is for definate.
Not sure exactly what would be involved in lowering it a bit, but like already said the cost would probably pay for its self in parts not wearing as quick with the stress.
I aren't bothered about any serious off roader thinking what ever they like about me, I aren't a off roader, apart from feeding the duck ponds and pheasant drives and a bit of lamping I don't do hardly any other off roading, I just like it the way it is and looks, you are right by saying it's my toy.
I am running cooper stt 285-75-16, apart from holding a bit of gravel they have been very good on the road and about as aggressive as I would go for a car used a lot on the road, a lot better off road and on road than bfg a/t in my oppinion and a lot more sensible than the 35 inch creepy crawlers that were on it.

Re: Anyone know about lifted landrovers?
I know we've harped on about it mate but we're a pair of old school off roaders (well, rodders is just old)
Lowering it depends on how the lift was achieved. might be a simple as taking a spacer out from under the road springs.
your landy might (should) have castor corrected radius arms so lowering could well throw your castor angle out....it wont straighten itself up if you let go of the steering wheel.
If it does, castor corrected bush's should sort it, rather than having to re-fit oem radius arms
The above is one reason a lot off roaders work on minimal modification basis. In your case its a bit of a catch 22, damned if you do.....damned if you dont
Let us know how you get on with it though mate

Re: Anyone know about lifted landrovers?
Drop it down to a 2 inch suspension lift and put on a 2 inch body lift.
