Hello from Swansea

Post by Tazhunter » 07 May 2014, 12:38

Hello guys, my name is James from Swansea south wales. Thought I'd pop in and introduce myself, I'm just getting into the world of night vision and would like to build my own rigs at some point but lack the knowledge at the moment, so I joined where guys are in the know :-) , I'm planning on 2 DIY projects.

1. I would like to build a hand held spotter unit with a screen, but not sure what to use a intensifier tube or a camera I need to see about 300 yards? I am going to use an old CCTV camera case I have to house it all in, I would like to have the battery housed in the unit and just be able to plug it in and leave it charge, also be able to record from the unit.

2. Is a gen 2 monocular I can use on all my day rifle scopes, Im currently trying to find someone in my area to make a housing for the intensifier tube and whatever else needs to be added
I've got the ideas in my head and can see how they should look, but needs the knowledge and some words of wisdom :-)

Any help you guys could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hello James and welcome to the forum.

Looking at your post, my advice would be to make a digital spotter within your camera body and rather than try to get a housing made for your tube, sell the tube and use the money against building a digital add-on to use on your various rifles.

Simples ;)

Thanks george, for the spotter I think I shall go the digital route. I wanted the monocular to go on the objective end of the scope because I can't use screens to shoot lol, I had a go of my mates ns50? The one with the screen above the scope and I couldn't shoot with it, guess I like to have a good cheek weld on the rifle. Where's the best place to get an item list and wiring diagram?

The spotter I would like to just plug it in and charge it without having to take the battery out and a big enough battery to last a good 7 to 8 hours, a av port so I can record because I plan on making hunting youtube videos, to hard wire the the ir torch in to the unit so one switch turns on the complete unit, and be able to see relatively clear to 300 yards if possible.

The objective monocular I already have the gen 2 tube and it will be so hard to say good bye to it lol, I need to make a housing to fit the tube, but I don't know what else is needed to make a unit with a tube? Do I need a camera one end and a lens the other or is the tube act as a camera also? Lol also the tube I only payed £20 for, one of the guys in my club said you want to buy this off me! Which was a night vision monocular, tried it and it worked great so asked him how much he wants for it, give me £20. Took his hand off lol. 2 weeks later broke don't know why buttons stopped working when I turned it on when it went dead tried charging and it charged turned it on and same again, so decided to take it apart to try and fix it but didn't work. Then I seen it was a gen 2 tube binned the rest and put the tube away for a rainy day lol. So I am determined to make something of this tube.

I was looking at my scopes x3 the other day and they are the exact same scopes, so I'm guessing the bell in the scope is going to hold the same thread, I thought of it as think of a moderator for a rifle that screws on the muzzle, so why can't I make one to screw into the scope bell? So a cylinder design with a battery pack bolted to the side with a power switch, sorry if its plain guys but new to this lol.

James, my thinking was that by the time you got a housing for your tube, along with sorting a power supply and front/rear lenses, you could easily build an add-on unit with a digital eyepiece from a video cam, so eliminating the screen which you don't like.

Lots of builds along those lines have been done by the clever lads on here.

I've got a Landrover starter motor here that I'm quite attached too, so I think I'll buy all of the parts I need to go with it in order to build a Landy. Not practical from a financial or build point of view. Same thing with your tube ;)

welcome to the forum James

if I were you, I'd stick to mounting your planned add-on to the back of the scope......that way you wont have any issues with poi changing ;)

cheers jock

Hi James and welcome, I know you don't like the "high screen" of the NS50 but you can mount the screen on the side of the scope that works better, I found that if I twisted the screen to the left, level with the scope you can then move the camera at the end of your scope to give you a true picture.
I'm trying to mount a 5" screen on the side of my scope at the moment but am still playing

Have fun :D
