yep, thats it....i couldn't remember meself last night

the trouble with land rover is that they've alway been screwed by whatever parent company owned them at the time

landys have always sold well, so the parent company used them like a cash cow. LR have one of the best R&D departments in the industry
but there was never any cash spare to build what they designed (*project iceberg for one) or do the job properly

the S3 should never have exsisted. when the S3 was released should have been the first coil sprung utility land rovers

perhaps it's better Iceberg died Adam, it would have been doomed to failure anyhow. I can't think of one engine that's been successfully converted to diesel. If you think back to the days when it was being done Perkins themselves, the brains in this case, built crap engines. They were whacking great lumps of cast iron that wouldn't start and were gutless when they did. it wasn't just perky though if you think back, BMC made a few that were just as bad, the Ford York was only fit as a boat anchor.
If you think about it diesels came to being along with computers, before cad and computer simulation the only way to test a diesel was make one, and it had to be a perfect replica of a production engine, otherwise not worth doing. This meant they took a best shot in design, then beefed it up and lowered the power just to make sure it stayed in one piece, then put it into production and hoped for the best.
Diesel and petrol are entirely different beasts.

Now the 101, that should have been portalled, tidied up a bit, put on coils, had the TDI fitted with an auto option and put directly against the Mog, but at half the price. That would have been a winner.

You're right about the series 3 though, should have been coiled (I remember it coming out quite clearly, we reckoned the funny dash would make it a no hoper)

While we're on about LR's, tell me, why didn't I buy the 107" 12 seater I was offered for next to nothing. You just never ever see any about now

My Perky engine was a bit unusual.

It was a 3.8 and came to me in a packing crate. It had been a starter motor for the huge generators for the furncaces at the Alcan smelter up the coast.

The furnaces were seemingly only shut down once per year for routine maintenance and then this thing used to kick them back off, so pretty much zero hours use.

It had a huge long stroke and sounded like a dumper.

That was, if I remember correctly, the perky 4308 (4 cyl, 308 cu in). Weighed a tremendous amount, revved to about 3 rpm and ripped boxes apart with torque. Once you got off the torque band though they were pretty low on power and the rev limiter was so low you needed overdrive on a series.

Having said all that, what choice did you have in those days, Perky or BMC and the Perky won hands down. They fetched good money a few years ago as they were sought after, then the TDI came along and killed the market for them

It was the 4308, Rod. I'd be surprised if I still didn't have the handbook here for it somewhere.

Used the original Rangie box and was fitted via a Milner plate. Seem to remember that about 2500 revs gave 65mph and it would go on to mid-nineties. Ancillaries looked like a plumbers nightmare, especially the routing of the throttle cable.

your absolutly spot on rod. iceberg would have turned out crap, at best. BUT it would have driven the market for a larger diesel engine and it wouldn't have taken until defender to get a diesel with a hope of keeping up with traffic

they did try a civvy 101. project lama if you remember....they didn't get the military contract for it so that died on its feet too
i have seen a couple of coiled and re-engine 101's.....they are very special indeed

speaking of special, 107 station wagons are me dads all time favorite.....he goes all misty eye'd whenever one is mentioned LMAO

i still want either a 88" forward control or a 110 hi-cap crew cab.......just to be contrary

Seen the lama up close and personal, there we a few in Pressed steel fisher in brum (think it was them). Tilt cab made from glass fibre if I remember correctly, quite a nice looking tool, they were a sort of sage green. It was worlds away from the looks of the 101, probably too civilian if anything.

The 107" safari I was offered just sat at the side of the road for years, don't know what happened to it in the end. Must fetch a bit nowadays though I would think, rarity value alone would fetch some money. Haven't seen one for donkeys years.

George, this is one of the troubles with retro fitting engines, wires, hoses, brackets all over the place. When I put the 300 in my defender I bought a write off with the engine in and used ALL factory parts, it looked and drove like LR had made it on the production line. It was a lovely motor, never let me down in the ten years I had it and we did some miles in that motor.

Sad ain't I  It was a nice cab on the lama, trimmed out well. Luckily I was around when you could go round LR works, talk to drivers and design staff at Eastnor and really had access to information that would be unbelievable these days. At meetings it was just one big family and you could wander over and speak to anyone

Do you remember Alvin Smith and strange rover, probably the first range rover comper ever built. Think he was from Surrey way, remember it was a long way to the meeting in an 80"
