Hi Guys,

I just got back from walking the dog and stopped another burglary in progress (second in 6 months).

It scary that a lot more burglaries have been happening around my area, the police turned up after a couple of minutes but unfortunately it only takes a couple of minutes for them to get away.

I want to set up some sort of CCTV system so that if anyone attempts it at my house then we would have a good chance at catching them.
Its no good having video footage like you see on crimewatch, where you have a shadow of a person and no way of working out which part is the ar*e and which is the elbow. I see that they have HD cameras nowadays.

Does anyone have any experience of CCTV? Perhaps we have a CCTV expert on here?

It is good to have CCTV for your property as many times the insurance will refuse to pay if there isn't sign of entry. It does happen!

These people will get into your home, through the front door, take some stuff and can close the door on the way out.

Just last week my brother was watching his TV when he noticed an Asian guy by his front room door.
He asked how the hell he got in and he replied "with the key", claiming that he was looking for number 1a... So he asked the man to try the key again and after a few tries he opened the door.

Unfortunately my brother didn't know about bunk keys, so he didn't actually check his key to see if it was modified.

This problem is related to allot of the older locks, some of the newer ones are protected for such tampering.

If you get a CCTV system, get one that you can record and view the footage at the same time. I think it is called multiplex? Have a look at:

Get one that can be viewed over the internet if needed.
Camera wise... I don't know much about the HD ones. But the E700 would be great as an analog one. The trick is to place the cameras in the right place.

Exactly, I feel that the people doing the burglaries are watching the properties, the one a few months ago was a old guy that lives on his own. He always popped to the supermarket at the same time each week and that's when they choose to strike.

The "seasoned" burglar don't care about dogs, alarm, CCTV and other protection you may have, if they are determined that they WANT something, they will find a way to get it. Unfortunately I have been a victim and also other members of my family.

I know of a family that after they got burgled, they installed iron bars on the outside of their windows and doors, you can say that they were like prisoners in their own home.

One day they left the property for their usual food shopping, on their return, they had their home cleared. The bastards used cordless cutting equipment to saw the metal bars. On other time, some people were acting as a removal company and cleared the house in broad day light. I don't like talking negative but it is reality and bonfire night and Christmas time is the worse time.

We can try make it harder for the criminals by talking to the police for advice on security, they might know things that could help protect our homes.

I upgraded my cctv this year and it works better than the old system and was half the price of my old system,after a lot of research i got a 2 camera setup from Maplin complete with dvr for about £125.
It was a refurbished setup that had been returned damaged or unwanted and came with full warranty,they said it might not come in original box "but it did and looked totally untouched.
I added 2 more cameras wired it all up and to be honest I've never had one problem with it,you can also view on most smart phones "i have a samsung note 2 and its very clear indeed.
Think the whole setup ending up costing around £225 with the 2 extra cams,If you sign up for the maplin news letters you never know mate

I have one cam set on my koi pond and was a bit worried if the built in ir would work well hitting the water but its a fine,
Its that clear i have actually sat and watched and recorded my koi spawning.I will over the next few days send you the make and model etc,i didnt go for wirless as they can be a right pain in the harris They dont seem to sell the refurbished stuff in the shops only in the newsletters when you sign up.if you want any more info drop me a pm with your number and i can give you a call

Andy, you get what you pay for mate.
Those cameras are 420 TVL. 700 TVL is the way to go... Unless you go for HD/megapixel.

Some DVR can be accessed by several members of the family at the same time from multiple locations. Unless you get one that can still record while you are viewing the footage, you will have gaps in your security.

I agree with the 8 channels DVR though as you can always add more cameras if needed.

Sorry chaps but I have to pour scorn on this thread (not the burglars bit, its shite and I feel for the victims)

What the hell have we been strapping to the back of our scopes the last year, 18 months? CCTV companies should be asking us for advice
