I do drive as close as possible and carry it the shortest distance I can get away with. But then I am a lazy git so would do that anyway.
Re: cheaper idleback type chair
Thanks George, I didn't think to put in "surveyors" tripod, only theodolite tripod. First one's silverline and there's some silverline things you just don't buy, anything to hold your weight being one of them
Second one is collection only, what a bummer. They're in Kent if I remember correctly and the fuel would make them too expensive, nor will he post
Edit .. put in some different search terms and came up with a few that will ship
All we need now George is the plans

Re: cheaper idleback type chair
No plans, it's all in my head (voices, voices).
Let me know when you've got your tripods sorted and I'll do a pictorial fella for you. It was actually very easy, already having the Idleback here.
It's a case of dismantling the tripod then shortening the legs to suit. Then, re-assemble. That's the base done.
We had a couple of breakfast bar stools up the shoot. Single column with a heavy base and a seat on top. You know the type. Remove the seat and keep (bolted on). Cut the upright down to maybe 6 inches, so that you have a tube with a bracket on the top. The tube will sit into the hole on the top of the tripod (where the theodolite normally sits), so you need to bush the hole to accept the seat tube. A rainwater downpipe union was perfect for my seat tube and allows it to swivel.
A tripod leg lies horizontally and affixes to the bar seat bracket. The seat fixes on top of this leg.
A right angle bracket fixes the horizontal leg to a vertical leg, which forms the now infinitely adjustable backrest (unlike the Idleback chair). Fabricate a comfortable backrest to suit.
I'm now at the stage where I have to make pivoting brackets for the front. These need to fit onto the horizontal (which has the seat on it) and then another leg fixes to these brackets, forming the rifle rest, which angles away from you. Atop this leg will be a horizontal channel, into which sits your forend. Simples
Sounds like more legs than I've said, but some are only part-legs. You could probably get away with one tripod. You would then need to make the base, backrest and rifle rest from something else. Aluminium box section, perhaps. Depends what you have at hand, really.
Get the picture? Or, clear as mud?
George

Re: cheaper idleback type chair
i honestly cant picture making something truly man-portable that passes muster for a sturdy shooting platform, though i realize such must be possible.
i know handier men than me, that reported its a study in frustration.
i wondered if anything could be made from PVC pipe and PVC couplings, that might be passable enough to make use of... but never tried it. The idea being that PVC could be broken down when you are done... as long as you didnt glue it...

Well, I understand that, boys... but see, my CAT gets the silly idea you're making fun of HIM... then he gets, *really* mean...
