Erm, hello everyone!!

Post by stratts » 04 Feb 2013, 13:11

Hello peeps, I'll be Stratts and I'm new ish to NV. I joined a while back but never came on to post as I usually frequent the various other shooting forums.

I'll be popping by for advice now and then and thought I'd post up what I have to play with.

Me and a mate have each side of a chopper pilots NV helmet rig which are a few years old, but believed to be Gen 3. They are nice compact units, are focusable at the front for varying distances and at the back they seem to also make the depth perception a bit clearer when you turn the eyepiece?!

We're aiming to fit them to a challenger dsa to use as an add on, which can be quick released if needed to still be used as a spotter, as they are good out to 300 ish yards with no illuminator. Only thing is they don't show up eye shine, which is something we'll be working on.

Has anybody come across owt like em before, as they have no markings at all for obvious reasons?
Mine seems to have some crud on the lens and it'd be good to give it a clean, but I dare not take it apart!

I also have a Yukon NVRS-F I'm borrowing off a friend to try on my FAC rapid. Any tips for illuminating this better for slightly further distances?

Cheers

Stratts

Hello Stratts and welcome to the forum.

Do the spots on your 'chopper' nv units move when you turn either the eyepiece (diopter adjustment) or the front lens? Just trying to narrow it down as to whether they are tube marks or dirt.

Hi
Welcome to the forum, from another newbie.

I am sure the black spots could be dead pixels. They are very common in NV units. You have to pay a high premium for one that has none.

My brother has a friend that I have never met. My brother says he has a NV unit that also does not light eyes the eyes up. His friend uses a separate external illuminator that does light up the eyes. You can purchase an illuminator from a member on this site. I do not want to start saying any names just in case it sparks off another row ( The harmony just now is to good to risk changing). He can be easily found on here.

I like the image through your unit. looks really impressive.

Cheers guys I've never really took much notice as to whether they move mate, I'll try it later on.

The reason I thought it may be dirt is because it's mainly been used down the Cambs fens where the soil is proper fine!

I've tried a piece of IR filter on my Tracer lamp and it lights up like daytime, but it also seems to temporarily 'burn' the crosshairs onto the NV so I stopped that in case it got damaged. I think the lamp was too powerful for what I needed.

What is diopter adjustment mate, never heard of that before?
Do you think it's Gen 3?

Cheers

You'll be needing adjustable illumination, start with it turned down them turn it up if needed.

Gen3 will give a small 'halo' when you look at a light source (looks like a ring around the light), be it a distant house light etc. from your picture I can see no halo so possibly it's gen2+, nothing wrong with that, some gen2+ tubes are better than poor gen3.

Diopter adjustment is to focus the eyepiece lens to your eye same as you get with binoculars. To set it up I look at something really dark or even with the lens cap on then adjust it until the sparkles are nice and clear then you'll find the picture will be at it's best.

Hi Stratts welcome to the forum mate. I don't have any of that big boys stuff but those streaks look like the sort of smear I get on my monitor when wifey cleans it. I'm kinda thinking it been wiped over not very well but as said - I don't do tubed stuff.

DOH - Now I've put me glasses on I see the streaks are a landscape. I'm going back to the other section ha.

Cheers chaps I'll adjust it later.

How easy are they to clean out if it is crud and should I be using anything specific to clean the lenses?

Deben do an adjustable switch for my lamp I may have to try it out, unless there's a cheap source of adjustable 12v dimmers you guys know about that I could splice into my lamp wiring?

Cheers

Clean the outside of the lenses with a good lens cloth, whats inside stays inside, learn to live with it, you could unscrew the lens to clean it but you could end up making things a whole lot worse.
