PIR's, anyone know anything about them?
PIR's, anyone know anything about them?
I have one of those chinese wireless driveway alarms set up to use at bait points now and then, and it can be useful. It means I can hide out of sight drinking coffee and the alarm alerts me to anything approaching.
However, it's range of detection is only about 5 to10mtrs ish tops, and even the ones advertised as 100' omit to tell you that's transmission range, not detection.
Is it possible to build or buy a remote PIR with a decent detection range?

Rod, have seen remote PIR's alarms for security protection of caravans and boats, someone must manufacture a wireless version that could have a decent range back to a base unit. They also do wireless kits to protect garages that are at the rear of someone's garden. It would be a "Google" challenge as a starting point. Motorbike owners with expensive superbikes might know who makes/sells a reliable tamper alarm type kit that would be battery operated.

Rod, this sort of idea ? 2 PIR's back to back on a 3 foot tent pole and wireless back to the base unit ?

There would have to be far better kits out there to protect expensive kit etc.

Rod,
A couple of interesting PIRs here http://www.voltek.co.uk/SecLight-PIRSensors.asp
90 degree x 18 metre detection range or 12 degrees x 40 metre detection range
Remember, those ranges are for human size targets. I can't imagine that you'd be detecting fox size animals at those ranges.
Cheers

Re: PIR's, anyone know anything about them?
I have something similiar. I have a place with a bait station and a very narrow field of view. My option was to get 3 receivers. Each receiver could take 6 transmitters so that way even though the range isn't great you should be able to cover a large area and not only that depending on how you set them up you can tell from which angle your quarry is coming in from.,in my case I have 6 transmitters total at the moment and it works well. Covers all areas I need.
I think the range is certainly 30 feet.
In my case the receiver has 3 led lights and sound. I switched the sound off and covered 2 of the LEDs as I found them too bright. You just need to check that the batteries are working well occasionally. Just walk past the transmitters and a led flashes on. Quite a cheap way of doing it.
The other alternative is to look at one of those light beams so when something crosses it breaks the beam. Not so popular as more expensive but another option.

Re: PIR's, anyone know anything about them?
Bruce, that's the sort of range I would like but needs to be wireless, and battery powered. A sort of self contained unit
What is it that limits a pir Bruce, any idea?
Phil, I use a driveway one now which works well enough, just a low detection range. Transmission to receiver is good enough (always need more though) but by the time the pir is up a tree looking over foilage or whatever you soon run out of range. Always seems to be some reason why the pir can't be in the perfect position to cover a decent area, and when it is it's too far away.
They're a great item for a bait station, or a run, as you can take your eyes off the target for a minute without thinking "am I wasting my time, did he trot past while I was pouring the coffee"
Think I'll maybe have to do as Gloop and get one of the sets with multiple pir's and one receiver, it's just more junk to carry though.

They're ok Phil, but you still have to watch them non stop. With the pir you have an led that flashes and on the one I have you get a little "bleep", this means you can relax and wait until the alarm sounds, then pop up and shoot it
