I knew I'd seen the chart for nm somewhere but thought it must have been for lasers. I didn't realise a 'proper' stated nm filter let light through 'below' the stated wavelength but that does confirm my thought that it lets all the light through above, thanks Chris. Didn't doubt what you said one bit but my unscientific exploits 'questioned' it.chas wrote:Nite Owl wrote:
I don't want to 'disagree' just maybe beg to differ a bit... I was under the impression a laser's nm specification was where the majority of the light is put out at, therefore there will be some below and some above the stated nm output. I've tried an 850nm filter over my laserluchs 808nm(or is it 810nm? can't remember) 150mw laser and there is still plenty of useable light for rabbits and rats but the original range is reduced drastically but also is the red glow at source. N1000's and dipol l3's don't seem to perform anywhere near as good with the 850nm filter as the laserluchs even though they are higher powered so for me that answers a lot about the spookyness of those lasers. ie there's a fair bit of light output 'below' their stated wavelength making them so bright. (The 850nm filter isn't from china either
)
Edit: I forgot to ask, doesnt the IR filter let light though, at AND above, the stated wavelength?
Quite possibly so James, obviously a lot will depend on the laser or filter, the figures quoted and tolerances, then I think there are both narrow and wide bandpass filters to complicate matters or should I say to confuse me.
I tried to simplify my post as much as possible without using to many "if's, but's and maybe's" for fear of going full circle and disappearing to where the sun don't shine.
I would imagine this subject could go on for ever more, but without specifics would go full circle![]()
Look on the top chart at what they class as an 850nm filter, it looks like 850nm is the 50% pass rate.

Re: Wanted: PULSAR L808 IR LASER
What I found was you could get some light through a higher nm filter than the stated laser nm but as Chas just pointed out even decent quality IR filters let some light through below their quoted nm so that's why the light comes through and is so dim. If that makes sense...sunndog wrote:ok then. what about filtering higher up the i.r spectum
does a 780nm laser throw out 780 and above?...so you can filter them down but not up???
if that makes any sense at all lol

Sorry Steve, I forgot this was even a sales thread. I haven't got an 808 for sale but I have got a laserluchs, it will do exactly what the pulsar does just it will cost you three times as muchsilent knight wrote:Great info chaps......Soooooo anyone got one for sale
Here's a pic of the laser beam with a 850nm filter in front...There's still plenty of light

I've been questioning myself mate, there seems to be that many variables and apparently misleading figures, I get the impression that if you want very tight waveband filters they cost quite a bit.
Who's going to buy a Spectrograph to settle all this ?

I know, it was purely for my own educational purposes. I had the laser pointing away until I had my phone in line with the eyepiece and then just brought the laser into the picture for a split second for the pic.
Could have turned the laser right down but was just trying to show actually how much light got through the filter. As you know once you get out towards 100yrds its pants with the filter.
Re: Wanted: PULSAR L808 IR LASER
I've got an ftir spec at work, but no ir filters to test.
Re: Wanted: PULSAR L808 IR LASER
took my filter out of my 808s and it was no good for nothing
put it back in but is there a front and back to them because its alot brighter now with the filter fitted
Two and half million made and three quarters of these still on the road, can you say the same about your 4x4
