Metal detecting

Post by gypo » 12 Oct 2014, 19:48

Don't laugh lads but I've been thinking of getting me a metal detector :)
Where I live has plenty of areas of interest.
Anyone got one and what should I be looking for should I get one?
Cheers

yep, I've got one. I enjoy metal detecting, it's just the folk who do it I can't get on with  I just like finding stuff, don't care what it is, but the serious detectorists get all anal about what they find.
I just can't find the interest in someone shouting "I've found a Roman whatever from 36ad minted in bath by Ted the groat on the 15th December and he struck it with his new tool with his left hand whilst drinking a pint of carling" I DON'T CARE History just doesn't interest me to that extent.

It could be the spark plug from an old Massey for all I care, I just want to find something

Nice when you find someone's wedding ring or engagement ring for them though

I've also got written permission to search the beach / dunes (inland) at shell island, now that may turn something up, whether spendable or meltable (?)

Be warned though, you dig a lot and just find scrap metal.

Funny enough I feel exactly the same. I fancy trying one but mainly to find lost pins etc out of machines. I just want an easy to use but something that would still find something worthwhile if it was there but just don't know what I'd need to spend or what to look for to get something I wouldn't want to swap for something better if I enjoyed it..

Right, I've got one of these

And one of these
http://www.metaldetectorshop.co.uk/shop ... t_id=61808

And one of these
http://www.metaldetectorshop.co.uk/shop ... t_id=61366

Plus all the other bits like spade etc.
You will always want a better detector, it's like nv, the grass is always greener the other side of the fence

I like detecting, I just don't like the boring t*ts that do it. They seem to be a very serious and subdued breed ........................ and that ain't me
In all seriousness, I joined a local club and they were nice blokes, helpful, polite etc, but there was only a couple who you could have a laugh with. Heckling at meetings was definitely frowned upon  That counted me out

Perhaps a few on here could get together

Thanks again for the info, just having a look on fleabay at them, it doesnt look as if you can get them any cheaper secondhand!
I was hoping that you might get something for around £100 secondhand just to start off.
I will get one at some point though. Just spent £400 on a new rifle so it wont be this month I dont think
There are plenty of potentially good sites around where I live so it I think it could be worth getting one just for the fun of it :)

The one's I have come very highly recommended for novices, don't buy anything too complicated until you know what you're doing. You'll be surprised at just how complicated some of these with multi tone and led readout can be. It's also too easy to blame the machine for user incompetence (me  ) The other thing worth remembering, pay £2000 more and gain about 2" greater depth (if you're lucky).

Cheers buddy,
I dare not start looking just yet for one, I'll have to let the dust settle on the new rifle for a bit first ;)

Nice informative reply Rod

So would you say the first detector you linked to or the second one is 'best'? I'd guess the second because it's more expensive but is that because it has 'extras' I may not need?
It sounds as if that music stick is worth having too, are they as good as the reviews say?

2k for an extra two inches  I'll just take the top foot of soil off with a digger if I don't find nowt in the top few inches :wtf:

Second one has a better search coil and slightly more discrimination. Worth the extra  The pinpointer The Garrett one) is the best tool ever invented, now you don't have to crumble piles of soil through your hands trying to spot a tiny little coin or ring.

The garrett ace range is one of the best selling detectors ever :o And there's a reason for this, good value for money in the novice category

And Regtons (Birmingham) are a really good firm to deal with
