New Man from Down Under

Post by Skinni » 21 Jul 2014, 11:51

Hi all

Skinni here from Frankston Australia.

People I need help to make a spotter I am a computer spaz but with a bit of a point in the right direction I have the ability to follow instructions, not sure where to start and have been trawling posts in awe of everyone's talents!

I recently got addicted to night vision big time after forking out big $$ for an NS200 unit, now I am not complaining in any shape or form but I need a small challenge/project to work on. My goal is to build a spotter that is hand held and can push out to say 200 yards if that is possible.
I am sure everyone gets sick of offering advice to newbies but rest assured any knowledge passed in my direction will be passed on to others as I am a volunteer secretary for one of our larger hunting clubs with over 200 members.

So where to from here I am starting in DIY and see where that leads me and I will use the search of the forum, but if anyone has links to where I should start could you please help me out.

Cheers
Skinni

Hi Skinni, welcome to the forum mate.

There are loads of spotter builds in the DIY section - many of them inspirational.

It's worth reading through quite a bunch of them rather than being pointed to one because there are so many bits of one that will be good for another. That gets you the best build potential - suited to your skills and abilities - whilst leaving you to add your own ideas and show us 'wot you done'

Cheaper cameras can be used for spotters - and have the settings turned up a tad because it's not being used for shooting precision - but if there is any remote possibility you might revise it to a rifle sight then spend more and get the dogs danglies camera at the outset.

You don't need a large IR for digital spotters unless you want to see several hundred yards - but if you get a powerful one make sure it has variable power modes.

Wot Dave said above, that about sums it up. One thing a lot have found out the hard way is to spend your maximum budget (wisely) or you'll live to regret it pretty damned quickly  Read the threads, then read them again to absorb the info.

Oh .....and welcome. haven't heard the word "spaz" over here in a long time

Thanks All

I am off and running I have read a heap of stuff but I have missed a something along the way for sure and I need to re-read stuff a few times to really grasp it, I will post questions it in the correct section so as to keep the forum clean.

Otherwise I look forward to some friendly banter.

Cheers All

 welcome to the forum, Skinni.

You won't have a problem reaching past the 200 yards you are looking to, I tested my camera, jus a few minutes ago, it will be used for a spotter, 200 yards no problem, using a 3 mode T20 IR illuminator at 10% power, with the beam focused on.

Enjoy the addiction. 8-)

He's bang on the money there.

Most could not possibly imagine the gains if they have only used rigs with cameras that add on to the back of a scope. These are not suited to everyone but it's a wake up call for many. :D
