Right then.

I'm going up to the Berwick on Tweed area for a week and fancy having a go at some shore fishing ( boats make me ill ).
I have a 12ft, 2.5lb Carp rod, a bait runner real and that's about it, so, What do I need to be in with a chance if I have one ????
I know George is clued up on this subject, all info welcome to a novice, line strength, hook type, rigs, lures, baits etc.
I do actually have a few old pike lures, the smallish fish shaped ones, some spoons and a few of those "snagless" multi coloured dangley bit type, Will they be any good ?
Not fished at all really for ten years so a bit rusty.

Just make sure that your rod is in good order, Chris, and always take care of your tackle .

I've found a few popular fishing sites from the internet right next to where I'll be staying (all rocky) and I'll be on foot by the sounds of it, so more interested in rigs, bait, spinners etc and what to expect.

Haven't fished for years but I remember using break aways so I'd not loose all my trace when fishishing rocky places. Also used lifters to rise the trace when changing bait not to snagg on the way in. You need to know what fish are 'in' in the area and what you are after before you decide on traces and bait but I can't give you any advice best wait for George.....

In front of the caravan site (on the cliff) is a mark called 'The Cannons". This is a predominantly rough ground area for codling and the like. Don't think your gear will be suitable and tackle losses would be high anyway.

There's also an 'island' in the same area. You can get on and off but need to be careful with the tides or you can get trapped on there (don't ask me how I know).

You then have the harbour and north and south piers. The harbour (at the point nearest the golf club house on the south side) is very good for flounders and eels. The tackle you have will be more than suitable here. Use either a baited spoon or a single paternoster rig on a small ball weight (1 ounce) and trot the bait.

The south pier is okay for coalfish, dabs and flounders (occasional codling too, which are red from living in the kelp). Cast a bait to the edge of the kelp bed that you can see in front of you and the coalies will come out of the kelp. The dabs and flounders are in the sandy bottom.

There are a few marks to the south, seaward of the golf course. One is the 'sloping rock'. Dangerous when wet and again, you'll need heavier tackle here.

If your carp rod is a 'through action', it'll be difficult to work a lure correctly, but you might get away with it. Best lures would be sinking 'fish-shaped', with which you might take coalfish and mackerel (if they are showing). If the mackerel are in, purchase a set of mackerel feathers ('daylights' are best) and use with a suitable weight for your rod.

Best bait for the area is peeler crab, which you'll be unlikely to get hold of. In the harbour, 1 cm squares of mackerel (from fishmonger) will do the job for flounders and especially eels. The eels are great sport, but wind them in very quickly as they can swim backwards and get off the hook if you give them any slack line. Always carry plenty of cloths with you if you're eel fishing. I've known eels to three pounds come from that harbour.

If all else fails, there are some great fish n chip shops in the town

Like you, I haven't fished for years and then it was course angling, preferably still water.
This expedition will either be a happy one to remember and talk about, or silence in the hope I forget quicker.
