Oh joy of all joys.

Post by chas » 30 Dec 2013, 10:35

I've just got a speeding ticket. :(
60mph on a single carriageway "A" road, but I was in a van.
Now do I just take the points and £60 or do I accept the offer of a speed awareness course ?
I understand the courses cost more than the fine but my license stays clean, however someone told me that having taken the course and should I get done again they come down more heavily on you the next time. Is this true ?
I hasten to add that the last time I was done was in 1987 (I think) and I do drive between 35,000 -72, 000 miles a year, so I ain't done bad I suppose.

There's no need to worry about being fined more next time (if there is a next time!) but you won't be offered another speed awareness course for (probably) 3 years. If you do the course it doesn't count as a conviction so won't affect your insurance.
Most people seem to think that the courses are interesting and helpful but it will take up half a day plus travelling so you need to work out if it's going to be worth it.

Norman. Bog off

Terry, thanks for that, the bit about insurance has swayed me, I'll take the course if it's offered.

Robert. I'll have to wait and see if the course is offered, according to the NIP I do qualify for one under the criteria stated, time will tell.

Thanks all.

I did the course and could not do another for 1 year, if you do do the course do not mention it to the insurance company as some of them still put it on the insurance and that will affect the price.

Nah, as long as you declare it on your application/renewal.
