I have always felt disappointed with the eye display quality on my Photon and have for that reason sort of figured it is really only suited to air ranges and maybe a bit more, even though it can see over 300 yards with decent light the image seen on the screen is wanting. The poor focus only serves to increase that feeling. The issue was beginning to bug me but a mega - bug occurred last night.

I met up with 'funked up' and got a good look through his - which has a doubler fitted. His is totally brilliant in comparison to mine. The clarity and detail of bunnies and a horse that we each compared was amazing. I don't like that really narrow FOV but feel that if I'm to keep the thing then the doubler is the only way to go - If that is what makes the difference. His was a perfectly focused image and much more detail could be seen.

Thing is, funked up says he doesn't think his was as bad as mine before he put the doubler on. We had the same 501b 700 mah illuminators and even looked through both while using just one illuminator for both rigs. I also tried a 3 mode Oslon Black 850 module later and it made naffall difference apart from the low power being noticeably unable to light very far. (T'was a moonless night) I couldn't see any difference between medium and high modes - I've not checked the recording yet.

I also noticed the image seen on his looked like it had a slight purplish tint.
We could do with getting a bunch of Photons together to see if they are all displaying the same image quality. I forgot to try the ebay IR module through the doubler equipped rig.

Maybe the manufacture has changed something in it... settings and/or components. I say this because a friend of mine had some problems with his NS50. the distance that he could see was less than 40 metres. He sent the thing back, they returned to him only for my friend to send it back to them 2 or 3 times. Eventually he got one back that is on a par with other NS50.

It could be a similar situation with your Photon.

I started with a doubler on mine, which I had bought before the photon even, all on the strength of Marky's excellent YT vid; I never even bothered to try it without the doubler, and overall I'm very happy with it, it performs just like on Marky's vid; I'm using one of your 700mAh Ir 501b's Dave, and can make out bunnies at ranges far in excess of my shooting capabilities (seeing out to 300+metres). I have been very happy with your light, which I think is also an excellent match to the doubled photon. I have one of Ian's T20 ir's which gives even more light, and detail at distance, as I find it. I'm only pinging the bunnies with my old .22 Brno using subsonics, to appx 70yds.

I'\d definitely recommend you to try a doubler, Dave.

Cheers Steve, that's a possibility that I'm seriously considering but I find it difficult to accept that doubling it is what has made the difference. I don't like the idea of 8 mag for air rifle ranges TBH, though it might very well end up on the HMR with that sort of image clarity.

I can believe each pixel will be getting more information but suspect that something other than image size is responsible for the improved clarity like maybe the incoming image has been filtered with lens coatings or whatever that might account for the different hue.

If anyone with a DVR gets a doubler perhaps they could show a clip where they set the rifle up viewing something and move the doubler in front of the Photon so we see the precise change of image a few times.

Marky's video was very good but I'd be keen to see someone doing what I have described above so that the same thing is seen at the same time and conditions without worrying about affecting their zero.
