Today I was given a whatsit, a thingumyjig, a I don't what the hell it is. The bloke gave it me because he knows I like messing about with junk That's what he said anyway

It looks like a little cine camera, there's a socket at the bottom rear where it sits on a stand (I assume) There's a little peep hole viewfinder on top. There's also a little chrome button on the front (remember this) and a lens at the front. When you look through the viewfinder you can see a view through two mirrors (side by side), one is fixed and the other swings about when you press the little chrome button (it's fixed when button released). It came from a steelworks if that means anything)
It was made by Contract precision parts Ltd.

What is it, how does it work, any value before I take it apart (if I bother) ??

It certainly sounds like it. I tried looking through this at the top of a wall and then up and down some brickwork to see if the image on two mirrors lined up in any way (the pendulum image is upside down) but they don't.

from what I can remember Rod, the cowley has to be sat on the tripod to release the two mirrors inside(when not on the tripod they are locked to prevent damage when in transit)
you then look down through the viewfinder...........line up with the staff .and move the legs on the tripod in or out to level the two mirrors which give opposing images.
you get your mate holding the staff to move the cross bar up or down till the two halfs line up


cant see it being much use for anything else to be honest
