Newbie Intro

Post by DEAN C. » 19 Dec 2021, 12:23

Hi thanks for adding me on here.
I am new to NV apart from a brief foray about 20 years ago with a very poor tubed dedicated NV that was useless.
Been hunting for more than 40 years with lamps of all descriptions on air rifles mainly and a bit of .22 and shotgun stuff. I did a fair bit of ratting form many years with white and red lamps with some success. Oh and some of you might know me as an Air rifle HFT competition shooter as well.

I have just bought a Ward 800s add on after reading a few write ups first. I tried it on a Mk 4 Leupold and it was ok but very limited picture area, so I have tried different scopes held up to the unit loosely and discovered you need a short eye relief scope to get the best from it. Thats the Burris timberline 4.5x14x32 no good I was planning for it as well, but it does look like it should work ok on my Leupold Vx2 3x9x33 EFR and some of my older japanese 4x16x40 tascos. I have heard the MTC and Optisan scopes are good, I've owned a few Mambas years ago and they are OK ish glass for daytime, but I dont think it will matter that much for nigh time.
Og the thin old type IR illuminator with no dimming on it was burning the middle of the picture so I have ordered one or Clive wards T20 Black sun jobs as I just want it for short to medium range ratting and rabbits on our small holding.

Any suggestions for an NV newbie gratefully accepted.
