Yes,
Just look at the bottom of the box you write your post in
It says "Add image to post" - try it - it might actually do what you want

even easier if you are using a desktop PC, just drag the image from its location into the typing pane.

Unfortunately I’m on iPad or iPhone

As Bruce suggested, tap add image, I had done this but that’s where my problems started, instead of a picture going over to my post I just got a very long line of letters and numbers

That's normal if you preview your post you will see the photo.
