As an after thought, I was told the other day that someone had dug out wild pigs (boar) from burrows
Smoking holes ??
Smoking holes ??
No, not some obscure medical problem. If you smoke holes (burrows) apparently rats come flying out, rabbits stay there and choke to death but how about the other varmints that live underground ? What do foxes do, or badgers (no, don't even think of smoking them unless you want to spend the rest of your life paying the fine) Anything else that lives down there?

I thought they lived in scrub etc

My thoughts were the same as yours regarding the pigs. Yet the Warthog live in burrows.

Re: Smoking holes ??
Over thirty years ago, I remember a local lad who also used to work the terriers, put one of his dogs to ground. Loads of commotion and yelping ensued. Terrier comes out with huge quills stuck in it, followed not long after by a feckin' porcupine!
Never did get to find out where the porcupine had come from though as there weren't any local zoos. The earth wasn't too far from a local university, so that became the only logical explanation.
Attenborough eat your heart out. No travelling to Africa, Asia or the Americas to film them, you could have done so locally (sorry, forgot, that's what you fellas have been known to do anyway
).

Re: Smoking holes ??
As kids we used to climb over the fence at the local zoo (at night), and scramble over the wall / fence into the porcupine enclosure, for quills to use as floats in the local cuts
Some of the stories about porcupines that used to go round were terrifying as kids, like they run flat out at you, jump up and curl into a ball before impaling you with thousands of sharp spines
Still went in though, I mean, you couldn't look like a soft lad at that age could you

I know, but you know what it's like when you 10 or 11, you believe anything your mates big brother told you. It had to be true because he was so old, he even had a girl friend so must have been really really oldchas wrote:rodp wrote:As kids we used to climb over the fence at the local zoo (at night), and scramble over the wall / fence into the porcupine enclosure, for quills to use as floats in the local cuts![]()
