What can you do with GBP1000?

Post by Doepie01 » 13 Nov 2017, 21:54

Hi everyone.

This post is completely off topic so please forgive me for that. I am a livestock farmer from South Africa and use nightvision, bought from forum members, to hunt Jackal and caracal that causes big losses on my farm.

I was busy to buy something from Clive Ward the other day and mentioned to him that a product that cost 60 pounds was way beyond my budget. I then thought by myself that he might think that i am VERY stingy and/or very poor. The latter might be true :D .

I am also always very amazed when i see something in the "wanted/sales" topics advertised for say 300 pounds and nobody query the price. I like to watch gameshows like tipping point and the Cube and when the presenter ask the winner what he/she will do with the price of 10 000 pounds the winner goes on and on with a never ending list that goes like this: Take family on a nice holiday, buy myself a car, settle my home bond etc etc. Then i think by myself what i can do if i win 10 000 Rand(my currency) and my list stop at "buy myself a Photon extreme"

I know and understand exchange rates between 2 currencies so i do not want a lesson on that. All i want to know' for interest sake, is the following:

"What can n British citizen do or buy with 1000GBP?" Is it a lot of money for the average British citizen? I hope you catch my drift?

Make me jealous! Best regards

For a relatively skilled man or tradesman £1000 in itself isn't vast amounts of money. However, there's always something of greater importance to spend it on especially when you're a younger man, mortgage, kids, car, kids, wife, kids etc etc. When house paid for and kids left home then it's playtime

Is £1000 much to a relatively skilled person in SA ?

Spot on there Rod best thing about retirement is playtime as you so rightly called it, worked hard all my life now both my kids are sorted it's time for us to enjoy ourselves big time.
My Kids will get the house and a nice few bob and the rest were going to blow on good times

The average salary of a UK citizen in 2017 is GBP27,600, so GBP1000 works out at approx 2 weeks wages.
That works out at approx GBP13.20 per hour for a 40 hour week.
At that rate a person would have to work about 28 hours to earn enough money to buy a new Photon 6x50
How does that compare with how long you would have to work for the same thing in South Africa ?

Cheers

Hi Guys.

Thanks for your replies. Very interesting so far. An average skilled person in South Africa earns about 180 000 Rand per year(GBP9600), 3272 Rand (GBP174) per week, 82 Rand (GBP4.40) per hour. So to buy a Photon i must work 100 hours if all my calculations are correct. New Photons 6 X 50 sell for around GBP400 on Ebay?

To look at it from another view. I will have to sell about 7 of my lambs to buy a new Photon.

Cheers

Interesting.
Average weight of a lamb here is 23kg, $6.00 a kilo at the yards, x7 =$966.00.
Ebay price for a Photon XT 6.5 is $934.00 plus delivery, or the RT is $990.00 plus freight from the importer.
So in Lambchop Coin the prices are similar.

Interesting indeed. Maybe we must start using lambcoin instead of Bitcoin.

I didn't realise the rand was so weak against the pound (around 18.6). the last time I was there it was around 12 to the pound.

Mate of mine is over there as we speak Bruce, buying more completely rust free Classic Range Rovers, VW campers and the odd Mini. They sell quite well back here, right hand drive and zero rust. Also buys the upholstery over there to refurb the Classics. The exchange rate makes a big difference.
Am I tempted ................. ooooh yes  Would "she" throw a hissy fit ............ ooooh yes  Will I risk a fate worse than death ............ oooooh no

Rod,
I know what you mean.
As you know I'm not a Landrover fan, but I do like Toyota land cruisers and their ilk.
Toyota make a vehicle called the Fortuner in South Africa - it's really popular there and you see them all over the place in Africa.
It's essentially a Hilux with an Estate car body (a bit like the Nissan pathfinder or the old Shogun Sport)
Although they are built in right hand drive with the same diesel engine as in the Hilux, Toyota UK won't import them because it would hurt their sales of Hiluxes, Landcruisers and RAV4s ( slightly more expensive than a Hilux, but cheaper than a RAV4 and a whole lot cheaper than a Landcruiser)
They are also made in Malaysia, and I did look at importing one, but because it didn't appear to have been done before, getting it approved for use on UK roads would have been expensive and time consuming.

Cheers
