Something THEY haven't thought of !

Post by rodp » 31 Jul 2017, 21:02

Just watched Horizon about driverless cars> All the experts came on and told us how it will be great, how it will cut over a million deaths a year, how we'll be able to sit back and relax while the car does the work.

Something they haven't thought of though :eh: This program reminded me of a conversation I had a while back about these self driving cars. The bloke I was talking to said he couldn't wait for them to appear, he hopes there's loads of them.
Every one will be programmed to avoid an accident at all costs, they'll do their damdest to stop before they hit another car. So, as he says, no need for cars with drivers to sit and wait at roundabouts, or side roads, or cross roads. So long as there's physically enough stopping distance you can just pull out on a driverless car and it will give way

How long before that catches on when the time arrives ............... I'll give it a day or so and the driverless cars will be at standstill

And here's another problem
What happens when a driverless car detects an oncoming vehicle which is going to crash into it and the only way out is to swerve off the road to avoid the collision, but there's young mother pushing a pram with an infant in it at the side of the road where the car needs to go to avoid the collision.
Now a well programmed driverless car would also detect the person at the side of the road - but what does it do?
Does it crash into the oncoming vehicle and probably kill the occupants of both vehicles, or does it avoid the crash and kill the young mother and infant?
How would the car be programmed to deal with such an situation?

Cheers

Rod - especially if they have any type of easily noticed indication they are driverless.

Can these driverless cars read temporary speed limit signs ?
Thinking about when a speed limit is put on a road, say overnight, for such things as a large county show or road works the next day.
If reliant on sat nav they're going to be a bit upset, but who is responsible because there is no driver so it must be the owner, or should it be.
Must remember not to put out any signs saying "Onions 50p" in case all these cars start slowing down.
