As a "Meccano bolt together vehicle" here is a interesting question about the choices of engines, gear-trains, and axles, for the Series models, the Defenders and the Discoveries etc. ???
Can't decide on gear-train choice, but would like a sequential gearbox ? but my choice of engine would be the Merc 300 D 5 cylinder "non turbo" engine and for axels Dana "Jeep axles" with discs on all corners ? Old school and dependable

Ah, seen that Disco before, beemer engine I believe. Hmm I've still got my Disco, and the RR got a 3ltr beemer engine.

20 years ago there would have been a transplant going on this weekend Next weekend would have been a test run. And the following weekend would have been spent putting it back together again

No no no, 5ltr v8 and auto box Diesels just don't hack it off road, not enough rev range, and auto wins hands down in the mud.

Got pulled 30 odd years ago 45 miles from home in a Series 2 truck cab that had a 42 inch PTO circular saw-blade mounted as a "tray back design" very pleasant policeman could not agree that "heading half way up through mid Wales and running on duty free was acceptable he was even less impressed that the journey was being conducted on trade plates
I can still remember some of his comments and questions that made me laugh and lost for a valid reply
Part of his closing views on the whole legitimacy of the journey was "this can't be a legal use of trade plates for the purpose going to cut logs ? I thought that it was far better to mention as little as possible and rely on the point that "he seemed to be amused at the situation and not sure where this situation was going to end up "
I didn't have the balls to tell him that I would be coming back down via Llandovery before dark with car transporter trailer full of logs on the tow hitch for a delivery
There was a time when "rural policemen" ignored a lot of minor highway issues and just put it down to the Jed Clampett mentality of the "yokals" ?

Rumour has it that up in Ceredigion farmers make up their own rules on what vehicle or plant can possibly be driven or towed down the road regardless of any of the requirements of VOSA, the DVLA or any Health & Safety requirements

Ha ha, Phil, the police just don't have the same relaxed attitude around here to trade plates, and even less to running red. No if's and no buts, run red and your motor is impounded and taken away, the compound and police then work it between them so by the time you can get it back the charges out weigh the vehicle's worth. Good system eh, if you can get away with it ?

You know what they say about fuel though, never mind the cost, feel the poweeeerr
