A moderators life ?

Post by rodp » 29 Dec 2012, 09:34

Having never been a mod, nor do I ever want to be, I have two questions. Bearing in mind the slanging matches of the past couple of days the questions are.

Is there an upside to being a mod ?

Can a mod ever please all the folk all the time ?

:) :)

Well to your first question i will say i am a member first then a mod,i really get a buzz out of seeing guys build there own units etc.
I am no good at all at DIY of any sort but think its great that members come on the forum sharing there ideas and thoughts,

Lets hope the thread that got totally out of hand does not stop members sharing there ideas with other members,i don't really see why it should but time will tell.So in answer to question one i cant see to much difference to being a mod or a member to be honest.

Your answer to question two is very easy NO NO NO

I would not volunteer for it nor take the job even to the point of having to turn down a request to do it, which I believe is the usual route to that position. Being in charge, or leadership, has often been shown to be a very lonely place when a tough decision has to be made.

That brings me to my "reason" if you like for sharing my ideas. It's quite simply another perhaps almost sad form of companionship. I'm a taxi driver who works permanent overnight shifts. At 61 years old, one of my several health issues is type 2 diabetes which has sleep disruption aspects. I thus try to occupy myself overnight on my nights off in a sometimes futile (why I'm awake now) attempt at maintaining my late bodyclock.

A man can have the best mates in the world, but not be able to find a local companion to share those lonely hours with. Specifically - it's near impossible to find a nocturnal companion who will lurk about in fields and sometimes kill things in the otherwise dark quiet country side.

That ain't going to happen for me though I sometimes have company available up till midnight or so. As you all know, part of the crack of any hobby is sharing the experience. Daytime alternatives, target shooting clubs, beating, clays, pigeon, pheasant or whatever else are not an option. So that brings me to various forums - which is probably a similar though less pertinent reason why other people join hobby related forums.

I'm also a curious type of bloke who likes to learn about things and tinker - sometimes unsuccessfully with things - but sometimes successfully too. I have taken to posting up details of my tinkering where most have lead to a positive result but occasionally one idea slips in with embarrassing or even slightly humiliating results but I do post up the failure acknowledgement.

One such episode was an "amazing black light discovery" posted on another forum which some longer term NV enthusiasts might recall.

The learning aspect applies to my membership of a Ford Galaxy ownners forum - I have saved thousands over the years with learnig how to do things for myself instead of paying someone else to do it for me. And as for turning towards growing my own vegetables.... :lolno:

Much too rushed for me, I like to chill and take it as it comes, there's always tomorrow. 8-)

I hate mods. but then, I'VE ALWAYS BEEN A ROCKER. YEAH BABY.

Wrong MOD?

I don't see any problem with being a mod. you have to try to be impartial as people all have different opinions. You want to avoid the slander and handbags and nip them in the bud, to try to be fair to the people.

One of the things I have seen on here is people getting a snot on by not always reading posts properly and then reacting badly, possibly spoiling for a fight, which is a bit like arguing with a drunk, if you have every done bouncing you will know what i mean. On other forums you would get booted straight off, here the mods do let you have your say and overall do a very good if not perfect job of not getting personal. And lets face it as fas as I am concerned the only perfect mod would in my opinion be me and in your opinion would be you.
