Hi for any one interested in drones/quadcopters I have just started a forum,been flying them a while now (mainly for photography and video)so decided to start a forum.

Loving it thanks Dave as I say I use it mainly for videos etc,must admit I've got to many at the moment and will have to thin them out soon.
I just finished a video for one of the land owners on a permission and he's over the moon with it,he was totally blown away with the quality of the quality of it filmed with the go pro.

Watched some of the program about the World Competition in Dubai (if I remember that location bit right) where the completion was based on flying around a very elaborate obstacle circuit in darkness that was highlighted by coloured neon lights that was over 600 plus meters in length. Impressed with the wireless video pictures from the drones cameras back to the video goggles, I need to know more about the best makes of video goggles for a thermal spotter camera that is waiting to get started. Like shooting it's a rather expensive and very addictive hobby,it has really taken off the last couple of years and is growing all the time.
I watch the fpv racing videos and can't believe the speed and stunts they do,I tried fpv (first person view)with goggles but went dizzy and totally disoriantated to the point it made me feel sick
And couple of the quads I have are capable of silly range one out to at least a mile plus,and the picture I get on the monitor is amazing,I've never pushed pushed any of my quads over about 500mtrs as I like to keep them in Site.

Roughly how expensive are the ones that go out a mile?

Can they handle heavy winds and downpours?

Could you fly around and cover a whole farm looking for sheep in trouble lambing?

As you can guess I'm sitting here thinking I don't feel like going back out in the rain to go around to check the sheep

To get out to a mile you would probably need to spend £400 to £700 that would be with gps and RTH (return to home)which automatically returns the quad to it's take off point in case of any loss of sight etc.
You can buy much cheaper but it's much like NV you pay for what you need and suits you.
As for heavy winds no not really I would not use mine in much over 20mph,water resistant is more or less a no go although certain company's advertise as rain proof I'm not convinced to be honest.
I think it is only a matter of time till the big drone/quadcopter company's start building to target the landowners/farmers,were I fly on my permissions the owners often ask me to look over land that is over
grown or very difficult to access.
Another great thing I love is mapping,you can set destinations on Google were the the quad will fly to hover rotate if you set it to and take snaps or video,then move on to the next destination you have preset and so on.
Hope that answers a few of your questions as believe me I'm no expert and have made many costly mistakes.

This morning's short-version episode of click on beeb one covered that world championship(?) in Dubai mentioned by Phil... good to see it was won by a 15 year old pilot from the UK! As he said... the course looked pretty damn complex with the moving arms on the course way markers!

They then went on to cover a UK developed commercial use Drone powered by pair of hydrogen fuel cells on top with the tank slung under the body.... they were quoting up to 2 hours flying time.

Worth a watch if you can find it on iPlayer.
