lost in the dark

Post by tazanimal » 11 Mar 2016, 09:55

hi all
here goes first post
been using nv for 6 months with a ebay special works well but i find myself disoriented and spend time tying to pick up the shot bunnies
i have a ,22 lr for night time off sticks most of my shots are 50 to 100 yards .
last night i shot one i thought was by the hedge i found it by accident 10yards in to the field closer .
the grass is 6" ish i don't get runners with the 22 unlike my shotgun i don't like taking the lab at night she gets bored and starts to wine just like the wife's overdrive (landy) got a yukon on its way next week see if that improves it
another thing when i line up on a victim they sit up to look at me is it the red glow from my t20?

Hi tazanimal, welcome to the forum. Cant do much about lost quarry unless you give yourself away by using visible light - or go thermal with deep pockets.

As for 'IR glow shy' we now have much more IR illumination available to us than many of us need and a lot of guys using the new 4715as LEDS are likely to be having the same issues if used at full power - especially at rimfire range.

I'd suggest using medium power at the maximum and let your camera do more of the work if its a decent one - but who knows what you got from ebay though - rather than it shutting down much of its performance due to use of excessive light.

once i get the yukon i will have more control over my ir
the farm i am shooting on is completely over run with rabbits and fox .
i get 2 shots per field with the 22 before they run for cover ,one shot with the 17hmr or the 308 and every bunny goes to bed for an hr.
by the way do the screens emit uv light cos i have head that deer can see it most washing powder has whiteners in it that fluoresces in uv light
if so i must look like xmas tree in the glow from the screen .

Red or green theater filter gel will help with the face being lit up.
A 940nm LED will reduce the chance of critters seeing your torch glow, but give much reduced throw.

I have something much smaller and cheaper and easier for you to accomplish your idea.

It's something from my other life in the flashlight world, it's called GLO-TOOBS from Nextorch , it's basically a keychain size extremely floody beam, available in 850nm and 940nm IR wavelength, it works on just one CR123 battery, available in Germany, maybe all Europe by now.

You have to hang them up from trees or rise them over sticks and spread as many as you need all over your field, and light them when ever you want.

I can't seem to be able post pictures from my IPod in here. So, I uploaded it.

I think many of you guys will find them useful.

What you need is a thermal spotter, just so happens I have one for sale on here  You can find a needle in a haystack with them, so long as the needle's warm

Don't get confused by the way those Toobs look, they have a cone shape reflector that achieves 360 degree of very floody and powerful light that can be adjusted in 11 levels, it makes 20 working hours on max and 80 hours on the lowest mode, you might not need than a handful to illuminate an entire field.

Anyway... It's cool stuff that came to my mind and wanted to tell you guys about, no biggie.
