Hi

Post by Shadow womble » 17 Jan 2016, 10:22

Hi guys, I'm Ziggy from Lincolnshire and have decided to take the plunge into the world of NV. At the moment I have my heart set on an A grade Archer but it does seem as though a lot of you guys on here aren't so keen on them. I have looked through digi stuff and have seen some exceptional setups but I cant stand the heads up shooting position, so I'll be after a rear or front mounted add on. Any help and advice is truly welcomed..... as well as any banter. Cheers guys.

had an archer as my first NV scope and I can tell you from that experience that there is nothing wrong with the archer but...
you will probably not be satisfied with sticking with the archer and want to upgrade pretty quickly like I did.
The lack of magnification and field of view with an Archer means it can be hard to pick up foxes on different terrains, but the biggest drawback I had with the Archer was the time it took to fit the Archer to the scope after you had spotted a fox, it only takes seconds but a fox can move a fair distance in that time and then it can be very difficult to pick it up again in the Archer.

Hope this helps you

What price are you expecting to pay for an A grade Archer??

Hi, tried an Archer add on. Couldn't get my head right. Without it the scope was too far forward, with it on it needed a stock extension. The Ward D700 looks like a better option as it's shorter (and cheaper).

I'd recommend having a look through a few before you part with any hard earned cash. Personally like the digital although I'm new to this nightvision scene myself. Using a couple of Yukon Photons 6.5 X 50's at the moment and on the .22 they're deadly !

I've fitted one on my .243 with an extra torch but haven't tried it on the foxes yet.

Good luck with whatever you get, there's some great information on this site and some very helpful members. :D

Well, price wise, buying from Starlight they are priced at £3k. Now I have tried one previously on a Swaro Z6 and it was excellent but that was some time ago. I have tried the Arrow on the back of my March and while I spent a hell of a lot of time adjusting and twiddling etc I just couldn't see a thing through it, I'm guessing that could be down to the fact the minimum mag on the scope is 10x and its only 52 objective. My reasoning with the Archer is having used one on a Z6 if it doesn't work on the March then I can try and adapt the mounting to fit my Z6i. As it is I'm open to all suggestions but I don't want to have to shoot heads up and I want something that is removable/swappable between multiple rifles/can be used as a spotter when out on my own. I'm sure it's not the minefield I believe it to be but it certainly feels it

I understand your dilemma re: trying to find something that can be used on a variety of rifles.
The new Pulsar thermal front add-on/spotter (Core FHD50) might be your answer?
Failing that, I think you will struggle to find the perfect set-up and just have to compromise and have a dedicated NV set-up.

My Archer was paired with my Z6 as well, I think the Z6 is the best scope for the job, but the Z6i with its illumination controls could be a problem to get the Archer mounted. Yes you need to be able to go below 10x mag with your scope to get the best out of the Archer.
The Archer is a bit limited as a spotter, I was looking at adding on a lens that would improve the field of view and magnification, but I opted to sell it rather than spending more money on it and I went for a different and better (more expensive) combination.
Sometimes you are better biting the bullet and spending a bit extra at the beginning, rather than taking the long (more expensive) route to get to the goal.

Just been informed the Archer may not be suitable for the March as the min mag is 10x and with the doubler it will more than likely be a crap image.... now tying to offload some bits to get a new scope lol. Are you aware of anybody making a mount to attach one to a Z6i? I'm sure I read of one last year somewhere but I have absolutely no clue whereabouts on the tinterweb that was. If I cant use it on my .223 I'll stick it on my swede.....if it will mount ok.
