newbie on the site

Post by mozie » 28 Nov 2012, 03:08

hiya chaps

im mozie (paul) from notts iv'e been banging my head for ages making various light's etc for night vision but most failed, ive made my own setup as far as the screen and camera but i was stuck on the illuminator side of things.
ive spent hours trolling youtube looking at various lights and led's and also green laser's ive messed with but i stumbled across the making of lardy light and marky light and couldnt believe the result mark got, this is the type of thing i was looking for..

i can normally turn my hand to anything i have my own lathe access to my m8,s milling machine so can make normally most things i need
im also a carp angler and make all my own stainless bank stick etc etc for fishing which ive also sold to others on lakes i fish , but electronics is my down fall as far as resistors capacitors voltage regs etc etc then im baffled ive done bits but im a proper newbie when it comes to that, soldering etc not a problem as i used to be a plumber so im ok there unfortunately nowadays im at home allday as im a carerr for my wife and 2 disabled sons so money is tight to say the least, thats why i make most of my own stuff like my night vision im doing now...

what im using is basically an old screen from a dvd player you have for cars that fit on the rear headrest's and fitted inside a black box from maplins i also bought a monacor tvccd4-40mc camera that has a 8.5mm 1/3 ccd-chip and the min illumination is 0,4lux basically that means nothing to me, i know the lower the lux the better but not sure if that is good or not, it has the 16mm c-mount lens fitted and i get very very clear images through the 3-9-50 richter scope i use viewing on the screen, both item,s i run from a 12v 9ah sealed lead acid battery and also want to run the ir illuminator from there ive used a 850nm filter on my old pit lamp and get really good results but it means carrying around another heavy battery and more wires but i get a perfect round spot and decent range for my ratting on the farm permission i have..

can anyone recommend a led i could run from the power supply alongside the items im already running from there and if possible a  dummy,s  wiring guide i looked at a schematic and i was lost but one with something that say whats there ie 100ohm resister and watever reg and pic of were wires go i can follow but schematic im lost, bit like giving a woman a map to read

thanks in advance and must say im glad i watched markys videos and got to find out about this site

Welcome bud, I should be on a commission for new members

As your using digital theres no need for a dimmer if you use the zoom funtion.

I know you said moneys tight but I will modify a d cell Maglite into my latest design for £50, this gives you the same performance as the near £200 Dereelight but with easier adjustment and much more compact. It runs from a 2.1mm power socket and takes about 1/3amp so you can run it off your same power supply.

You'll struggle to get the results I'm getting in my vid though because the spec of your camera is pretty low to be honest

Sounds like an advert, not meant to be just trying to help, alternatively, turn up an adapter and mod your own maglite and find someone handy with a soldering iron and follow this drawing

cheers marky must say i've watched all your videos and i was blown away by your results you also have a great setup while out in the wagon, bit like me when i had my van for carp fishing, all the mod cons
i do have an old 4 cell maglite somewere knocking about how much would you charge to supply and wire all the electrics together i can manage the mod on the maglite this end on the lathe and rather then aralditeing together i would screw cut threads and screw together using rubber o rings to keep it all water tight

what ive also tryed is the green pointer laser's running at 532nm i believe they are,if you take the ends off the laser and look down the center you see another lense on a brass piece, if you pop that out the laser then is infra red running at 808nm but then you have to collamate the beam using small optics

the camera i have was able to see this light brilliant but unfortunately i cooked the laser with the power supply i was using so that was another thing in the bin :wtf:, i9 have an ever growing bin full of bits ive tryed lol but if you dont try youll never know

anyway cheers for that and look forward to seeing some more of your vids
keep up the good work...
