Hi All

I am a new member to the forum but a well experienced hunter having the fortune of growing up in South Africa and now based in Perth, Australia.

I would like to pick your brains regarding NV add-ons for my rifle as I am sure most of you have forgotten more about NV systems that I will ever know!

I have a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 scope mounted a Steyr Tactical Elite (.308 Win) which I use for night-time fox hunting in Australia (yes, it is a bit of over-kill!). I am keen on fitting an add-on night vision system onto the scope but need some advice whether I should go the DIY route with a Sure24 E700 kit or fit the Ward-D-700. I really like the Ward-D-700 as it don't change my head shooting position but I am not sure how it will handle the .308 Win recoil.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Hi.
I have used the Ward 700 attached to an old Swaro PVI 2 on my 308 Steyr SSG69 without any problems, the rubber eye cup prevents any harsh knocks to the user. I think it needs a heavy rifle to absorb the recoil so you should not have any problems with your Tach Elite.

I thought I'd reply here as it helps the collective knowledge.

No problems with recoil with the Ward D Vision 700. Worst case tested so far is a light weight unmoderated CZ in .30-06 no damage to either unit or shooter.

The only possible issue you may have is that the PST only focuses down to 50 yards where ideally you need a scope that will focus down to around 35 if you wanted to use the full mag range. It should still work but you may need to limit your mag to 8x ish.

Clive, that is very useful information. I generally hunt foxes at night with the scope magnification set to 6x.

If the Viper doesn't work you could get QD rings and a Bushnell legend HD for around $425. These do work with digital, a 286m kill on a fox was recorded at one of the UK meet ups with a rig much like Clive's behind a 4.5-14x44.
