Another new-be saying hi

Hi folks - I'm probably the old fart amongst you all but nevertheless still keen. I come with an aircraft electronics background and many years of hunting and fishing experience. I came across your website by accident after I had spent 2 weeks guiding some friends trying to get them a stag [Deer] in both Sika and Sambar. The Sambar are nocturnal so require spotlighting. And did I mention elusive - they might be as big as a cow but they certainly dont move like them. I had to resort to an old DIY light intensifier hand held spotting scope I built a heap of years ago. We got in close to the deer but no stags. I also took along my camcorder set to night shot and tried to do some filming - wasn't very successful. But it did get me thinking about using IR floodlighting. While we were out looking for deer I couldn't help but notice the high number of hares around. And as fate would have it, at our local hunting club meeting the same week one of the guys happens to mention that he is a buyer of petfood and is buying hares at the moment for $5 each.
Instantly the old cogs in the brain are turning over reworking my original idea - and while researching on the internet I find this great website. Hopefully a lot of the hard research work has already been explored so I can get a rifle up and running quickly. I'm planning on shooting these critters at close range in the dark only using IR. I promise not to harp on again about the shooting (unless someone asks) as I'm guessing this website is intended for research and testing of new ideas and products. Thanks for letting me join.

Hi Kurly - welcome aboard mate.

If they are that shy there are low light capable digital spotters and rifle sighting sytems around these days - and when you sometimes need an IR illuminator it won't damage your rig. Have a good dig in the DIY section over a good few months.
