This is my opinion : Most religion use a written catalogue of alleged events, theory and opinion. Many can be quoted but let's take Christianity, as an example.
The accounts in the Bible were written and collated into a single publication in an area of the world known for fanaticism and likewise, known for it's tumultuous nature. The area was and is prone to extremism. Would I believe something with such a fundamentally 'dodgy' origin, no.
2000 years later a collection of books written during this time, in this area, it's contents are worshipped the world over.
Christianity and organised religion in general is a method of social control. From a sociological point of view, it is a way of subversively controlling the behaviour of the populous through rules and fear through consequence of breaking those rules. A bit like a law is'nt it !!!
It contains rules, consequences to those rules and a structure which places individuals into categories which can be controlled.
Attendance and adherance is mandatory or .........your out. Hell or jail, sometimes both ....take your pick !
Middle aged Christianity was a brutal affair, beheading, stoning, incarceration. Do as we tell you to or face the consequqences, all in the name of God
Did you know for instance that remnants of this remain in modern day churches. You know those long poles that you see in the aisles of churches, the ones with the brass tips. The original use for these was to prod anybody who fell asleep during the service :wtf:
I think you should be a good person because it is the right thing to do, it's that simple.

Hartshot,
I absolutely agree.
The other thing that pisses me off is that many, if not all religions think that their moral code is the only moral code (think ten commandments) and that atheists cannot be moral human beings.
That would imply that the jails must be full of atheists - which is clearly not the case and never has been. In fact in American jails, over 70% of the inmates profess to being God fearing Christians.
For me, all morality stems from the simple golden rule "Treat others the way you want them to treat you" (masochists excepted!!) and that you can definitely be "Good without God"

Cheers

I think we might be related. I have been saying all that you have said for years. I concur with every thing you have said
Religion was created to suppress the populous.

Watch the film, The Magdalene sisters, based on how the Catholic nuns and priests treated the girls that were sent to them for something they had done in life that the church looked down on.

I think to be a priest or a minister today, your CV has to include your name on the sexual offenders list.
The people that are guilty of these acts are from all religions not one in particular.

I am an Atheist and proud of it. I had the Jehovah witnesses knock on my door. I live in the middle of no where.
I opened the door and recognised one of them from when I was a kid, living 38 miles from where I am now. before they could say a thing. I said, I aint interested in Jehovah,. They asked why. My reply was to the point. If I want a pint of milk, I go to the supermarket. If I want religion, I will go to a church. Any religion that needs to come knock on my door to get new members is not a worthy religion in my opinion.
I asked them politely to not have anyone come back to knock on this door. The same person came back 6 years later. I opened door and told them where to go, not so politely. I told you not come back to this door says I. They said, how were we to know you had not moved. I laughed and said I would notify them when I moved out. Yea right. Live and let live seems to be a thing of the past. It is constant someone is trying to sell you solar panels on the telephone or someone knocking on your door to sell you religion.

Leave me alone to do what I chose to do.

Hartshot, I couldn't agree more strongly with what you said, and well put too.

Sting even made the sentiment into a song: De do do do de da da da

Poets priests and politicians Have words to thank for their positions
Words that scream for your submission And no-one's jamming their transmission
'Cos when their eloquence escapes you Their logic ties you up and rapes you

It's just common sense, to me anyway !

Tell you what though, we have covered some stuff with this thread eh

All the things we are not supposed to discuss eg. politics and religion and even alien life..........we discussed them

You know what strikes me is this -

The lads on this forum are so down to earth and decent we could still touch on "dodgy" topics and get along, even though we may have differing views. We listened and considered but crucially, let all have their say without judgement

NOW THEN , THAT TRULY IS A LESSON IN TOLERANCE AND UNDERSTANDING AMONG DIFFERENT PEOPLE.

I WISH THERE WERE MORE LIKE YOU LOT OUT THERE, THE WORLD WOULD BE A BETTER PLACE FOR IT

Can someone go and fetch one off the bbs, then we can really have some fun. I'm sure I can think of some more inane ramblings to annoy them.

All these answers though, still doesn't solve the cave paintings, the absolute accuracy of stone blocks and why make images so large you can only see them from the air, who was supposed to see them.

Go on then, answer me that
