Two schools of thought on soap operas or "soaps". During the 1940s-50s, disposable income allowed a radio or two in every "Murican home. The wife, the "house wife" would listen to her "Radio Shows" during her cleaning time. The time after the husband left for work, and the kids are off at school. Soap was advertised during this time. 1960s to today, Television era. Soap operas stared at noon and went until about 3PM. Some were sponsored by soap companies as they finally figured out the house wives are the only target market paying attention to them.

Toe-may-toe, Tah-mah-toe. Pah-tay-toe, Pah-tah-toe.

Tah-mah-toe, Pah-tah-toe, is the gaudy Italian pronunciation. If you ever visit 'Murica, you don't need to worry about figuring out who is of Italian decent...those people will be sure to tell you that they are Italian.

Now if you hear it pronounced Tah-may-ters or Pah-tay-ters -or- Tay-tors, you're in the south. Then you're around rodder's kin. Black toothed, cross eyed, and if sheep are involved, "Bahh" means "no".

Yes, the Guinea question.

This is a South American thing. Nothing to do with 'Murica, its people, or affiliates.

"Guinea" has some history on it.

1400s-1500s Spanish Conquistadors visit what is now Southern United States, Caribbeans, Central America/Mexico, Southern America. Areas are populate by indigenous natives (Indians and jungle people). Spain finds that the locals have gold. Kill locals, take gold.

1600s- Spain colonizes areas. Kills locals, takes gold. Converts locals to Christianity.

1700s- Enough trade that areas convert to common currency. Most prevalant, the Spanish Dollar.

1700s-1800s- Trade is good enough that other countries in Europe want to stop by, kill locals, and take their gold. Trade and colonization booms. Walt Disney invents Pirates. Pirates kill British red coats and take their gold. The Dutch are now evil sea monsters, because everyone hates the Dutch. French are nowhere to be found...big surprise. Spanish dollar is gold standard. Free-rider effect on local political states, develops secondary currency. The "Guinea". A Guinea isn't worth as much as a Spanish dollar. Something costing a Guinea is equated as "costing nothing". Foreign trade hits markets in South America. Common cheap food type is what is now called a "Guinea Pig". A large rodent that can be cooked up at a market stand and sold for few pence or shilling. The equivalent to what we'd consumed as a stuffed pigeon, quail, or Cornish hen. Guinea Pigs, being cheap, goes great with Worcester Sauce, get shipped back to Europe as a cheap food type that replicates extremely quickly, and makes a cheap pet. The term "Guinea" is now entrenched as something that doesn't cost much. Guinea is not a common term used over hear, other than in the pet type title Guinea Pig.

1895- US has bought most of middle North America from Spain. US get in war with Spain. US has ship born Cruse Missiles, and F-14s. US whips Spain's azz in a naval war. Spain leaves the Americas, and writes off the colonies as an insurance loss. Spain retreats back to Spain, which is now North Italy with Mexican accents.

1990- US finds magical place called Iraq. Us tries to kill locals and take gold. Things don't work out so well. Spain doesn't show up to help for some unknown reason.

I thought the American Guinea question was "Why are there so many Wops in the mafia?" :P
One of my online friends is a retired Guinea who's uncle was in the Mafia and ran the numbers game back in the 50s. My friend became an insurance salesman and then a cop, so in a way he followed in the family business. :P
He pointed out that when the Mafia ran the numbers game the odds were usually 600 to 1, never more than 1000 to 1. When the Govt. decided to run lotteries the odds started running 20,000 to 1, then millions to 1. The Mafia was proud of running an honest racket, the govt. not so much.

Hmm.. Just looked Guinea up on Urban Dictionary. Apparently its very rude, the equivalent to calling a black man a Nigger. So I would like to apologize to all Wops, Guineas, Niggers, Poms, Tight Arse Scots, Merkins, Cowardly Frenchmen and sheep shagging Welsh that I may have insulted on this forum. I'll never apologize to a Kiwi though. A man has to have standards!

 Only asking the specific historical question about the origins of "selling and buying in guinea prices at auctions in parts of Great Britain" or a easier and more direct question "what was the reason for the start of the practice of selling and buying in guineas at auctions in parts of Great Britain" A trivial question and very unimportant really, just a useless bit of historical information   Thank you Phil

I haven't got the answer but the only reason I heard of for selling in guinea's was they were worth £1.05 where the vendor got the quid and the auctioneer got the 5p although it's the other way around now...almost :wtf:  It is in fact better if your selling something though as the commission doesn't seem as bad. If you're buying it's a piss off especially if it's in the thousands as it whacks the cost up when you come to pay

I've never heard of "Guinea" used that way....to the point that I cannot contextually determine what point you are trying to make in the Mafia thread.

We do have the phrase, "I need a Guinea pig", meaning I need a volunteer. Guinea pigs were used for drug and lab testing, as they were considered disposable.

To use the phrase properly;

I just built a questionable shotgun out of an old motorcycle frame. hairyyoda, come here! I need a Guinea Pig to go shoot the thing. ...as I hide behind the nearest block wall.

Frogman, you have a very good sense of humour for an American :D

Here's another British question, open to the Brits too.

Why is our paper money called a Banknote and why does it have a picture of Queeny and the words 'I Promise To Pay The Bearer On Demand The Sum Of' ?
The early bird may get the worm, but it's the second mouse that gets the cheese.
