Buy something along the lines of a good Mammut mummy bag and you will have toasty nights ahead of you. Coupled with a wind/waterproof bivvy bag you will be as snug as a bug.
What do you consider a British winter? I'm looking for something suitable for -6 to -10C in a cabin, or 0 to -4 in a tent with the possibility of dew or light rain. As with any tent...water happens.
The issue with US market bags, sportsman or the rare USGI surplus is they are the same size. 36"x 72" 84cm X 183cm. I don't fit in these. They're too short and too small opening at the top. I'm a big man. I get in the standard size bag, and try to zip up, I run out of zipper at about my belly. My shoulders are too wide for a 36" bag. Too boot, at 72" the bag stops at about my armpits. Certainly not enough to keep anyone warm.
I remember that whatever the "British Commando" bags were, had a longer and wider variant. Is this true today?
By British winter I mean at the least -3 to +5. Prior to arctic training I was advised to purchase the specific mammut bag. Whilst on the course we trained with the SBS/SAS, not one of those lads were using the arctic bag.

Try this website they are listing a 60" wide one that should be big enough.
