Adam, there are many possible explanations as to why they communicate via email instead of over breakfast. The two most obvious are:
a) English as a second language difficulties. It's a well known fact that most Brit's don't speak English, they speak one of many strange aboriginal dialects that apparently date back to your Golgafrinchan ancestors; full of whistles, whuffs & 'ts. Much like the clicking of a Kalahari Bushman. Depending on where Splatty hails from, he could be speaking fluent Gumby while Jian is speaking English.
b) A civilized persons disgust at consumption of gross 'food' that should have been abandoned when starvation was no longer a constant threat. This can kill both appetite and conversation. I have a theory that it's the ongoing consumption of kippers, bloater, White & Black Pudding that have caused our galactic neighbours to ostracize us, not the obsession with cricket.

Carry on like that young man and I'll get the queen to send your entire nation to bed without any dinner!

Well, I was born and raised in the Black Country and so have at least one side of 3 generations before me. I'm dark haired (what's left) and brown eyed so, apart from a devilishly handsome beast, what's that make me ? Pure English ?

ha ha Never bothered to look back any further. I do know my Grandfather spent some time in Ozz by all accounts, working in quarries. There used to be a photograph of him standing with a sledgehammer. Apparently he went there for a few years to make some money and let a little altercation here die down He was a big lad so it's said, and now and again drank a little too much. I only remember him as a very old guy but even then he stood quite large. I would only be 6 or 7 when he passed on.

I ought to look back a little further really as it's said in the family one of our earlier members owned a steelworks, be good to know which one and where it was.

No rolling mills round here now, all gone. The oak(Round Oak Steelworks) was the last big one and that site's now a shopping mall (Merry Hill)
Lots of little fab shops and the odd little foundry / forge but nothing of any substance. You can still get anything made / turned / cut / machined here, probably within a mile of any given point, but no steel makers.
