In units with equivalent lens sizes, it won't be the lens at fault. It could be either the microbolometer, which is, essentially, the infra-red detector, the processing side, or the display. I'm afraid I'm no expert on them, just an avid userFox Hunter wrote:What's different about each unit George? I can understand the differences with tubed nv units with blemishes etc but what's different with digi type devices to make them perform differently? Is it the germanium lens and not the processing thingamie bits inside regarding the thermal?

You need to upload them to photobucket or the like and then post the link to photobucket. There's a thread on here somewhere showing exactly how it's done.
I tried mine earlier, in auto it wasn't a brilliant pic contrast wise with the landscape as it's been hammering down here. I switched to semi (the gain was under 100 on auto) cranked the gain up to 190-200 and the detail in the lanscape seemed better. The sheep heat sources looked simular really so I switched back to auto, the unit callibrated itself and it looked pretty much the same as in semi. I really don't think I'd bother using it in semi. What I did notice is if I pointed it more towards the sky the horizon seemed better on the semi setting but I can't ever see me shooting into the sky at night. It would be good to see your photos to understand exactly what you're seeing.

Re: Thermal..... Again!
If you'll excuse the pun, rain "washes out" the images on the thermal reducing contrast to the point where it's difficult to make out much detail. Not too much you can do about it except wait and hope for the rain to stop.
The rain is like a thermal blocking filter placed in front of what you want to see.
