I'm sure there's somewhere you can click "not as described" for a refund

Be careful about this, I had to open a case a few months ago and ebay expect you to deal with the seller and sort it out that way, if there's no response they will get involved but watch out for the deadlines.
If you paid by Paypal you might want to contact them as well.
If it were me I would be writing to the carrier and also refer the matter to the police. Clearly someone has swapped the detector for the books and it's either a fraud or a theft, either way a criminal offence has been committed.

Thanks for the info,
I tried PayPal but it referred me back to eBay.
Thing is with trying to log it with eBay you can't actually contact them them and send a message to them it just keeps referring me back to contacting the seller.
As far as the police go that will probably be a waist of time, They won't want to know in my experience.

That's how the ebay system works, you have to give the seller the chance to sort it out to your satisfaction but you just have to keep sending emails to the seller and open the case with ebay as soon as the deadline arrives.
As for the police you may be right but you should still try, it may be that there is something bigger going on and your information is key to sorting it and the same goes for contacting the courier company. Someone, somewhere has ripped you off and it's up to you to keep the pressure on. Good luck.

Tell myhermes, eBay and the seller. Save all packaging, do not remove the tape from the book as there must be some fingerprints on the sticky side and if it was one of the carrier's employee, it can be spotted, especially if they have had similar problem at the same depo.

I received an empty box where there supposed have been an iPad in it. John Lewis was very professional about it all and resent a new one, I was lucky.

Hope it gets sorted soon for you.
