Frankly, I don't care how much land you have or how long you've been shooting, swinging a loaded gun around just to have a look see implies poor firearms safety. Get a spotter - that's what they're for.

What people are trying to tell you is shooting with night vision is totally different to shooting in daylight.
We are talking about safety shooting at night with Night vision.
Its nothing like shooting on a lamp.

I guess I sound preachy because I am a believer in what I say.

Some background to show I'm not just a twat with a keyboard:
I'm a former national level practical pistol RO, international level practical pistol competitor, IPSC state secretary, Fullbore club secretary & captain, member of the managing committee on a 600 acre range used by 20 plus clubs, delegate to ministerial meetings at state and federal level representing the shooting sports on access and regulation, sometime collector of milsurp rifles & handguns. I've trained many new shooters on rifle and handgun & ran two range open days tallying over 2000 newbie shooters. I hold a firearms dealers authority allowing possession, manufacture, sales and testing of pretty much everything other than artillery. I stopped stockpiling ammo after the floor boards started sagging, the most I've ever shot in one range session was 1400 rounds - I needed some 9mm brass to reload. These days I'm mainly a social handgun shooter, small game hunter and internet gun nerd.

I've been swept with loaded guns and seen negligent discharges and make it my mission to prevent them from occurring.

I'm a night vision newbie, but I've been reading and picking the brains of the members of this forum and others for months and have developed a lot of 'book smarts' as I try to add a new level of shooting nerdery and the implications for safety are obvious where your vision is restricted to the field of view of an eye piece and when other people cant see you at all.

On a more practical level, A spotting monocular only needs one hand, allows you to sling your rifle and use the other for support if needed. If in a vehicle or blind a monocular is easier to turn to scan in different directions. I'm practicing what I preach "Hallelujah Praise the Lord and handload some ammunition!" *ahem* I received my Yukon Newton Hornet 3.5x42 today, purchased due to the good advise of the members of this forum. I'm still waiting on my Yukon Photon. If that doesn't show soon then I'll take lessons from the master cobblers here and bodge together my own.

Oh yeah. The only type of mushrooms I munch are fried with onions, or sliced in a salad or roasted with butter. The magic ones I leave alone. I'm not that type of wizard.
