I've found out that most of the mini lathes have a 20mm dia bar feed thanks chaps. It hadn't occurred to me they would be that small but no worries I can just cut bar as needed.

Seems there's even smaller than 'hobbiest' lathes that will do the piddly little stuff I want doing.

i don't know a great deal about lathes. but that sounds impressive for a bench top unit. will it cut aluminium at that size?

george, your machine looks slightly bigger, as in 'mini' rather than 'micro'. that may explain why your chuck is bigger

was having a quick search on the net and found that i can get a bigger chuck that will take upto 90mm but its arround the £100 mark,
to be honest i dont think it would handle anything hard in that size,

just ordered some delrin rod to have a play with

my eldest spent an hour last night playing on it, just turning down some 10mm thick bolts, he thought it was great fun.

could see him having a look round to see what else he could stick in there to turn down

think i may have to hide the keys

Or, I bought another lathe on the spur of the moment a few months ago. Can't remember how much I paid but it wasn't vast amounts.
It has a bit of wear here and there and there was no motor with it (I borrowed one off something else to try it). I tried it and it all works perfectly, any play is work aroundable (?).

You interested in it? It will be cheap for a lathe seeing as how you're on this forum. It will get you started and you're only just up the road (I wouldn't want to walk it though ).
If Dave's not interested and anyone else is (forum members only) let me know.

I maybe inersted in that young man. Main thing is it needs to be seriously small and inexpensive. And what will do as a motor... placed in the exact right position?

How small? ERM, I'd like to be able to carry it into the conservatory or even the small kitchen that her indoors is resigned to sharing with my PC breakfast bar 'office space'

I'm currently watching an unbelievably tiny one somewhere.

You can carry this one about, I had it bolted to a piece of ply (right up your street Dave ) and a motor held down with a little bracket behind the lathe (on the bit of ply) and a belt to the lathe.

Be warned, you'll start off tiny and soon want bigger ..........................and bigger.......................and bigger.......................and bigger You get the idea ?

I started off with a battery drill...............and I've just done a deal to get a two ton miller I shall make the best swarf in the Black Country, the jobs will be rubbish but the swarf will be ace
