Tbh though mate as far as outdoor gear goes you live in the land of milk and honey. You'll find better at your local REI shop

Rodders, down is fine mate, Its all i use. In civvy land its not difficult to keep a bag dry and even if it does go tits up it takes a hell of a lot to wet out a modern bag

Adam, is it down you use, or the modern hollow fibre equivalent still called down. I know a mate of mine had one of the ex military down filled ones (58 pat ?) and when he got that wet it was useless for a week, he had to buy another on site.
All my stuff is proper goose down. The warmth to weight ratio and packability is unbeatable. I almost can fit my -5*c quilt in a good size thigh pocket!
No sleeping bag is any fun if you get it as wet as your mate's, he must have totally soaked it.
i bet the shell material played a good part in soaking up and holding the moisture in your mates bag, 58 patt bags are big heavy beasts that don't seem to breath well

Buy something along the lines of a good Mammut mummy bag and you will have toasty nights ahead of you. Coupled with a wind/waterproof bivvy bag you will be as snug as a bug.
What do you consider a British winter? I'm looking for something suitable for -6 to -10C in a cabin, or 0 to -4 in a tent with the possibility of dew or light rain. As with any tent...water happens.

The issue with US market bags, sportsman or the rare USGI surplus is they are the same size. 36"x 72" 84cm X 183cm. I don't fit in these. They're too short and too small opening at the top. I'm a big man. I get in the standard size bag, and try to zip up, I run out of zipper at about my belly. My shoulders are too wide for a 36" bag. Too boot, at 72" the bag stops at about my armpits. Certainly not enough to keep anyone warm.

I remember that whatever the "British Commando" bags were, had a longer and wider variant. Is this true today?

see if you can find a 'coleman big basin' on offer. you can get em for about £30 here. I sleep warm and i'd be fine at -4*c in a tent
I'd be shocked if you found a more roomy bag. at 6ft and well built i can sit up cross legged inside it....honestly they are huge

PM me a delivery address for your good self Frogman  . I have a catalogue here that specialises in finding sponsors for medium term exchange accommodation homes for young Russian ladies so they might learn a foreign language

Right now they have a interesting two for the sponsor price of one offer on their bookings  You pay BUDGET FLIGHTS from the Urals and you get constant companionship from two nubile lovelies who are well used to extremely cold weather

One of these lovely young jems either side of you on a cold night and you will care not a jot whether your sleeping bag is water proof, wind proof or stain proof :o

Plus you could learn Russian as a second language, it's a win, win deal
It is a bit slow here and it's raining.

I'll have to check that one out. 39"x96" at least gives me length. A whole 3" of shoulder room is nothing.
I have slept in "queen sized" bags. Here we label beds as single, double, queen, king. A queen size bag is more of a bag for two people, rather than the size of a real queen mattress. Anyways, the one's available in that larger size can't hold up to the cold. I gave mine away.

C'mon Phil...I live in Cleveland. The "Mistake on the Lake". We have all the eastern European imports. Russian, Ukrainian, Romanian, Polish, Slovak, the other Slovak, Bo-hunks, Croaks telling you they're polish, Syrians telling you they're Italians...pic your poison. Do you like blonde hair, kankels, and crazy, or dark hair, moustach, and crazy? A local has to know all those languages just to get a cup of coffee, breakfest sammich, and fill up the petrol tank in the morning.

Colman do a left opening and right opening bag so that you can zip the 2 together and make one massive bag, in season 2 or 3, the 3 would be warm enough I would have thought, also
Try this website they are listing a 60" wide one that should be big enough.
