It's funny really, 'cos tubes can be quite a personal thing to your eyes, just like scopes. My eyes prefer a bright image all of the time and I really don't mind if a unit is fitted with manual gain or not, as I don't turn them down.
It's just like the fact that a great tube can be unimpressive when fitted to a body which has poor glass, and vice versa.
