Last year I was lucky enough to get to sit in the pilots' seat of one the Dambusters (617 squadron) Tornadoes when they were based at Lossiemouth, and got the grand tour of the jet by the squadron boss and his Weapon Systems Officer -a lovely young lady called Poppy.
Turns out, on their first deployment to Afghanistan, they did not fire a single shot or drop a single weapon, but on their second tour they used every weapon in their arsenal.
It also turns out that the lovely Poppy is the person who "fights" the aircraft - she's in contact with the ground controllers and chooses and sets up the weapons for an attack. She then tells the pilot where to fly the aircraft and tells him when to fire the weapon(s)
I had a good look round the Tornado and although they're getting on a bit, they still pack a helluva punch - and they have a thermal to die for.
Not surprisingly they were a bit coy when I asked them about l lens size and sensor resolution
Outside the squadron offices they have full size replicas of Barnes Wallis's bouncing bomb and also one of the "Tallboy" 12,000 lb bombs used to sink the Tirpitz.
Inside they have lots of stuff commemorating the Dambusters raid and bits from the Tirpitz.
Best laugh was when I was looking at some old books and found a Haynes service manual for a Lancaster!!!!

Cheers

Nothing like the G forces some of those boys and airfames incur but my brother did a negative G pushover while treating me to a ride in his helicopter.

Going through it in my mind - if I got it correct - that involves pulling it up to point skywards, come to a halt while still pointing up - gulp - apply negative pitch and drop the nose to point almost straight down and fall. I became weightless in the seat and about fainted. He then did a cloud base simulated engine failure landing onto Lands End airport, right outside the dwelling on the edge of it where my grandparents used to live.

I keep asking my brother to take me up in the plane he flies for a living and pull some stunts. He says there's two reasons why he can't.

(A) Thomas Cook will get annoyed,

(B) The vomit from 300 passengers wouldn't half make a mess.
