Introduction from Swansea

Hi Guys, my name is Tony and I live in Swansea. I've been a keen shot since the age of 14 (now 64) and having built a few add-on's for Ratting and Foxing I fancied going down the scope-less route which brought me to this site for information on how and what to do. So having briefly introduced myself I would like to say how impressed I am to be able to pick up some of the tricks of the trade and advice from you guys and learn from your experiences which you give so freely.

I will keep the add-ons for Ratting with the Cutlas but I want to build a dedicated scope-less rig for a .22 semi auto primarily for Rabbits and the odd Fox at the right range, so my first question will be what lens would you recommend for .22 subsonic ranges out to 75 yds. This question should probably be asked in another section so please forgive me for adding to my intro.

As stated I am a keen Goose and Game shot and stalk for Red, Roe and Fallow with either a .243 or .308, depending on quarry and location, I also build my own ammunition for these calibres, but the fascination I now have for NV vermin control can only be described as addictive and I look forward to discussing the pro's and cons involved with Night Vision members in the near future.

Hi Tony, come right in and take a seat.

A rough idea of the ideal lens size is to equate lens mm to average shooting range yards.
That puts the preferred focal length at about 50mm for 50 yards and 75mm for 75 yards.

It will be much easier and cheaper to source a 50mm lens.

Thanks for the welcome guys and thank you Some Bloke for the info on focal length. What would your recommendations be regarding a varifocal say 50 to 80 (If such a thing exists) and how would this affect the point of impact when adjusted between the two. Also as this is the intro section I'll move to the correct section next time round.

Varifocal is not a good idea.

You might get lucky but it's unlikely that it will retain the same POI. There is no need for that capability for photography, and they have more lenses - each of which loses a little light.

I will start the search for a fixed focal around the 80 mark.
