Hi everyone based in cardiff , Wales. I was directed to this site by another member on another site, I'm in the process of buying a nv set up , I can't decide between a photon or an add on its my first unit so trying to keep the cost down shooting out to 55 yrds your knowledge would be much appreciated, had some advice of some bloke( thanks) but still un decided . Hi Rob - I'll put my pennyworth in here too mate.

At air rifle ranges you have to be more covert than if the bunnies were further away from you.
The most covert - because it's the least IR option is gen2 or gen3 - which doesn't fit your budget.

The next minimal IR signature covert option - at a great budget if you have a second/spare rifle- is a Photon or scopeless home build.

Then you have several options for what you mount behind a day-scope - but the dayscope transfers less IR light so you need to bang more IR at your rabbits - so it's the least covert... but quite often the most appealing and practical option.

EDIT: haha George, I used to be undecided - but now I'm not so sure.

5 mag is very practical for a hunting air rifle.

Hi and welcome to the forum there's a couple of photons for sale in the for sale section as for ir t20 m8 get a 3 mode one then you can adjust for range and if you fit a doubler you will need a t20

My set up: I use a low or medium weaver mount for the nice compact head 501b torch, and better clarity can be achieved by fitting a lens cap iris. One can be bought, or made from a flip up lens cover, or maybe an aerosol can cap. I see no need to spend well over another £100 to bulk up a 5 mag Photon for air or rimfire ranges with a doubler or T20, nor faff around with zoom that lights up where human eyes can't see what's lit up outside the scope view.

You can see how compactly the 501b sits here - and that only moderate amounts of IR are needed for the very light sensitive Photon. These videos are at air ranges.

The first was taken before I knew about reducing the amount of light getting to the image sensor, see how clearly you can see brains and the pellet strike the dirt behind the first rabbit shot - and that you can see at least twice as far beyond that rabbit. See the pellet bounce three times well behind the third rabbit shot, and see three times as far behind it... even though the rig (and therefore the 501b with its extended run time 700ma driver) are still tilted down to the rabbit rather than edge of the field 160 yards away.

Get on there have a look at someblokes then have a look at some of the footage of marky using a t20 as for mounts Marky had them for sale just click on the nite tek logo at the top if he has none left eBay have them adjustable ones

Thankyou gents for all your advice, as for the photons for sale my thoughts are that I can buy a new unit for £400 plus warranty so buying second hand at some of the asking prices doesn't make sense to me or am I missing something? Also does anyone have any info on marky`s nt300 looks interesting . Thanks atb Rob
