hello all. I am an outdoor freak, hunting and fishing is what I live for. I'm been a professional firefighter for 27 years, father of 2 and been married for 22 years. I spend many weeks a year in he wilds of Northern Ontario after moose, grouse, rabbits, bear, deer, ducks, geese et all. Camp is usually small tag alders, 2" gauge placed in steak holders and bent over the 6.5'x12' atv trailer to form hoops covered with polly tarps. Off the ground, high and dry is good when temps can range from 20C to as low as -30C depending on the season. I started looking at video's from the UK about night shooting for rats and rabbits. Got me thinking about the dairy farm a freind of mine's family ownes. Rat's at night. Looking at a scope less setup for the 177. Will also be good to mount on a stock, no barrel or action, for night viewing up north while hunting. I would have to check the regs first to ensure it is legal, I value hunting to much to risk losing the right.

While I am here, does anyone have a DVR option other than the JDX990 for my build. If not how secure is ordering from China, have never done this for anything.

The idea you have in mind, I've seen used by hog hunters in the USA. A rifle stock, fitted with an nv unit, and illuminator and often a thermal imager too.

There are details of a few scopeless builds on here, all diy by some clever forum members.

Been reading for hours. I will look into the angle eye, thanks for that one. Also look into the other builds. I found Rolandsbench and was thinking of doing his build of the scope less. The 177 will wear it first and then maybe the 22lr or 17hmr.

I was in Yorkshire region this past September, Skipton and Connonley (sorry if spelling in not right) to meet wifes family. Both sets of her grandparents left the UK for Canada in the 1920's. The hospitality was fantastic and the country side "just lovely" as Jackie would say. Would have been great to do a tag along with someone there for bunnies or rats, new experience.

Be careful in the darkside, NV can become addictive eh!
Can't go wrong using the EJ-230 and Roland's videos for a scopeless rig, M42 film camera lens work well also.
Ordering from chopstick land just takes awhile to receive it. DX, fastech, bangood, ali express are some I use, just don't use manafont, they burned a few people when they reorginized.

If you are thinking about possible illumination rules - then tubed or scopeless is definitely going to produce more usability with no IR.

Digital cameras will require IR if there is not much ambient light about - but with a fair dollop of moonlight you can expect to see something like this - I'd 'stalked' these bunnies in my 4WD and took both head shots with no ir illuminator. Unfortunately the Watec in high gain format doesnt agree with the 990 dvr used, and the video has deteriorated since it was first put on the tube. I now know I would have done better with a little IR and low gain. What I could see was many times better than the poor image that is seen here. There are now better low light cameras around too:

I'm not aware of another DVR with a decent sized screen and I found the smaller 2.5" screens simply not good enough for my old eyes. The good news is that the JXD 990 is apparently much better with other cameras. I can also advise that you will get even better results from a 4"~5" plain monitor - with no chance of recording anything that might be misconstrued or twisted round as evidence from a DVR.

I found a JXD990 for $68.58 on aliexpress but am having a hard time putting any card info on the line. Call me paranoid if you want but I can't shake the internet scam feeling. To many people get burned on the net and I work to hard to give it away. The seller on Ali is Shenzhen Friendship Co, anyone have any dealings with them or is the transaction done through Aliexpress alone and they deal with Shenzhen.

Aliexpress is an escrow service. They hold the funds for 55 days before paying the supplier. If you receive the goods in acceptable condition within 55 days then you tell Aliexpress and they release the funds then. If you don't receive the goods then you lodge a dispute and the funds are held until its settled. Basically its Paypal for dealing with small Chinese companies. UK NVF members have bought torches, fittings, cameras, near eye displays, screens, etc through Aliexpress. I've bought torches twice, no issues other than shipping seems to take longer than Ebay transactions - but you have an extra ten days to dispute it compared to Ebay. I don't see much difference between Aliexpress and the buy it now feature on Ebay.
