hello!

Post by sedstar » 22 Apr 2013, 08:36

I am from the states (actually, i see rolaids is a member here? I live in the next state over, PA)

anyways, i saw the PHRASE "diy night vision" electronics project fooling about the web, it was basically some guy had salvaged the LCD display off a old camcorder (the eye piece kind) and plopped a cheapie board cam into the projct, and got them hoooked up and running. 1v peak to peak, is 1v peak to peak no matter how you slice it, I figured.

thinking it was "neato", I googled "DIY night vision"... and "voila!", I found the ROLAIDS video. I was hooked INSTANTLY! I had been putting off a gen-1 NV scope for years, cos you know the drill... gen 1 is affordable, but then you read its 50 yard device, MAYbe a 100 yards on optimum conditions, and you spend hundreds MORE on a proper illuminator... so, you might as WELL just go GEN-2... THEN you might AS WELL go gen-2+, or else you will wish you HAD...

and i didnt have a grand or two laying around not knowing what to do with it, lol... but the ROLAIDS guy? He "demonstrated that procedure" on stuffed animals, and i saw him hitting 125, 150 and more yards in the scope!

I was HOOKED, big time!

==============================================

got a 30 dollar night security cam at walmart, just to test the waters. Sure enough, got it focused on the scope (tube type mount) and the IR-LED "ring" was good out to 10 yards easy! Test run a blazing success, i realized i needed to go the "full monty". I liked ROLAIDS's rail mount, its self centering and auto-aligning in nature, as well as stiffer than a board.

I decided if HE THOUGHT the ej-230 was the thing to go with, so would i then. (i actually read the superior specs of the watec 902 series? but... its a little pricey for a first build... maybe next build we'll try that platinum version)

=============================================

i bought a LED IR EMITTER, 3 watts p60 style off ebay?

good lord, that thing sucked eggs. It lights up the ground at my feet, and not much more. I actually play with lenses, and already had a LED flashlight throwing a tight BEAM over a 100 yards already... figured focusing that up on the LED ebay lite would be awesome? it was so faint a light, i couldnt barely see it 10 yards away on the wall...

I realized LASERS were the way to go than, a laser illuminator would be the best thing! Then the price of the commercial units... led me to candlepower forums, then off to laserpointer forums.

learning the basic of assembling a laser there, i saw a video by a guy i think he was from HERE, calling himself "newbie guy" at laser pointer forums? HE posted a video there, similar setup as me? Hes showing illumination at 450 yards with his 500mw ir laser build!!!

I followed him HERE, cos i was getting mild static at the laser sight. basically, everytime you ask any question there about IR LASER ILLUMINATION builds? Theres a couple guys that suggest flashlights, or rings of LEDs are "safer", "work better", are "more robust"...

which is, as we all know, absolute poop (except the safety part, thats true). laser illuminator takes a LED EMITTER flashlight outside and stomps a mudhole in its bum, for distance.

personally? my crystal ball says, that member is a "liberal" and using his 6 million post "status" there to pooh-pooh IR ILLUMINATOR builds. (they dont have hard and fast rules there, and if a guy with a lot of posts disagrees with a new guy? They TOSS you without warning just cos a member doesnt like you and you disagree)

so... i wanna find "newbieguy" was his screen name as laser pointer forums... and find out what he built fr a illuminator, naturally.

PLUS? rather than piddling about on flashlight forums, and laser forums... this is where all the action is, people are building what i am building, they GROK what's going on...

so... hi guys!

i have a background that includes a little bit of electronics, and i am a long time shooter and reloader. I actually hail from a large reloading website, the "RLB" or "reloadbench.com". I'm fairly well thought of there, and i have become something of the "point man" on this affordable DIY night vision experiment.

if i get some YARDAGE in complete darkness, and its reasonable cost... several of "the boys" are gonna follow my lead, and likely a few more after that, when they see how well it works in person (we get together for a big shoot once a year)

once i solve this laser illuminator riddle, i am home free, judging by the 450 yards "mrnewbie" was showing in his video...

kinda proud to be here... i been talking about "this rolaids guy..." like hes a sort of god to other shooters around my home and work, lol...
Well, I understand that, boys... but see, my CAT gets the silly idea you're making fun of HIM... then he gets, *really* mean...

Hello sedstar and welcome to the forum, even though the route you had to take was somewhat long-winded :D

I'm afraid that if the guy you followed here has changed his username that you'll have to wait until he gets in touch. I've searched the forum for the name you said, but nothing comes up.

I think you'll find that most of the projects on here are in relation to getting the most from high power leds too.

Do like the reloading forum, by the way :thumbup:

I want to reload but got too much factory ammo. Need to shoot more foxes and deer. :yawn:

Btw, laser is dead, long live led! It's very good and if you argue with me your out :lol:

Welcome aboard, hopefully you will find so useful stuff on here.
I was impressed with Roland's stuff as well.
