Introduction & advice please

Post by jameslyons1978 » 18 Feb 2013, 07:44

Dear all,

Just joined yesterday. I've been a keen shooter for 10 years now but a move to Aberdeen got me into night shooting 2 years ago. I have 2 horse livery permissions up here that prefer me shooting after dark.

The shooting is all rabbit and fox. I shoot with my FAC Theoben and a .17hmr and I've used Dereelight lamps to great affect. Recently I bought a pulsar challenger GS Gen 1 scope add on and I'm loving its performance with an IR Laser.

I feel ready for the next step into NV and its going to be an add on either forward or eye bell but I can't decide what to do. Like allot of you I'm keen on the new Pulsar DFA75 but worried that the late delivery is really a problem with the product? Do forward attaching NV units change the POI? Do you all go with eye piece add ons? I hear Archer are a good bet? Any advise is helpful

Historically, forward mounted units could suffer from POI shift. Or so I'm told, I have never used one myself. There was plenty of new kit on show at the BSS but most of it has yet to be commercially available or proven. (well to people like me anyway) I like the idea of Front mounted but would want to test it first. (Scott country are advertising demos, ie get it for a week but I think demand is certainly outstripping supply. I think time will tell but I to my mind it will be later this year before we have definitive answers, when Jo shoter gets the units and gives the feedback to us. I am happy for others to spend their hard earned cash and then if it is any good then I may join them. lol

There are plenty of good units out there and if your foxing then you want to get above GEN1 so either a good digital or tubed Gen 2 or 3. Depends on your budget. Each system has its plus and minus points.

Have a look on here. Plenty of information. everybody has their own favourite.
And don't forget illumination. that can make a big difference.

It's a big old world out there and it aint cheap. so take your time, find a unit you like and try it.

Welcome to the forum James.

Sorry I can not be of any technical help to you, I just have my foot hovering over the first rung of the ladder to more light and knowledge.

Thank you for your advice,

I'm looking at all options but likely to stick with an eye piece add on as I know they work and both my guns are set up for this type of rig, I've got a budget of around gen 2+ so as you say, plenty of choice!

Hi All,

Just letting you guys know that I went with a Pulsar Challenger gen 2 plus as the gen 1 I have has been great so far, the archers were just outside of the price bracket for me in the end. Ill keep you all posted on the performance. :?:

Hi all,

I thought that I would update you all on the new Gen 2 challenger I bought. The main problem with Gen 2 is that you realise up until this point you've just been scraping around in the dark!

This unit is fantastic, last night I shot a rabbit in the head at 136 large paces on 16x mag! I'm only using an MTC scope and the clarity is great. I would happily take chest shots on rabbits at 200 yards. Attaching the unit takes around 30 seconds, a minute if your attaching a dereelight 800ir which I might add is a great bit of kit. Actually I found the Dereelight only really works well with Gen 2?

All in all I'm very pleased, next year I'm having an archer made for sure!!
