I’ll take your advice and buy a PARD 019, and a good torch.
Is the Sirius XTL overkill, or just a good torch?

Thank you, but i’ll pass on your kind offer. Im not much of a DIY when it comes to NV electronics, at least not yet.
To answer your question about tripod. I have to admit i hadn’t really thougt much about it but i can certainly see the point.
I think i will hand hold the PARD for close by spotting, which i expect i’ll do most of the time.
For long Range spotting i guess i’ll either lean it against pillar supporting my roof, or use a tripod. I have both a small table tripod and a fuld size tripod.

I have a Canon digital camera with, among otters, a 500mm lens, so i’m not totally unfamiliar with the need for stabilility.

I wouldn't say the Sirius is overkill, it produces the most evenly illuminated area of the 3 recommended IR illuminators.
