Bit of an odd one for the lateral thinkers.
Bit of an odd one for the lateral thinkers.
If you wanted to put some powder in a dish and light it, as in an old fashioned flash gun, what could you ingnite it with using say a 9v torch battery.(One of those little square ish ones with both terminals one end) Is there a cheapish electronic component that would go into melt down and preferably burst in to flames when connected to the battery?

Wire wool?
Peizo (sp?) Ignitor for remote operation?

Re: Bit of an odd one for the lateral thinkers.
Rod as Adam said wire wool in contact with a dead short across the P and N terminals of a charged battery = a mini sparkler, charged loose batteries that could come into contact with anything conductive = sleeping time bomb. On another point it's worth having dedicated battery cases when carrying spare batteries. Some of the old fashioned camera flash units worked on the principle of impregnated wire gauze arrangement.

Re: Bit of an odd one for the lateral thinkers.
I think all the remote igniters are 240v. Don't think battery would have the ampage for wire wool, but I'll try it.

The finer the grade of wire wool e.g. 0000 the easier it will combust

Re: Bit of an odd one for the lateral thinkers.
I have a 9v peizo unit in the workshop, i'll have a look tomorrow
Re: Bit of an odd one for the lateral thinkers.
Wouldn't the heat destroy a battery peizo unit after a couple of uses? I would ideally like to be able to use it several times at least, or be cheap enough to be disposable. That was the thinking behind some component that would self destruct.

P.S. Professional fireworks organisers would be using dedicated banks of remote igniters
